Ebay and Fake Designer Goods

Ebay is a wonderful tool, but some people out there use it to peddle poor quality counterfeit goods.

I have a liking for a certain designer clothes and accessories, but don't like paying full boutique prices.

If your thinking of buying off Ebay or any auction site always check the description very very carefully, if it doesn't mention genuine or authentic, ask the seller if they don't DONT BUY IT.

Also check any photos very carefully compare them to online retailers.

I've been done twice now, but the saving's on other items have more than make up for it.

What kind of stuff have you been ripped off on Matt?

I have a friend who has bought a lot of Replay jeans for herself and her kids and jackets, plus other fashion items quite successfully.  She even bought a Karen Millen dress for over £100 recently and was very happy with it.

One angle is is to concentrate on the phrase BNWT (brand new with tags) if you can, and to study the photographs carefully and ask for more if you are not sure.

Obviously if an item is not BNWT then it leaves much more open to uncertainty if you have not checked carefully with the seller before you buy. Or maybe you are saying that BNWT is no guarantee of protection against inferior counterfeiting. I hadn't thought of that.

Of course there is always the feedback tally.  Anything less than 100% positive has to be a warning.  Even if there is only one neutral or negative there is usually no smoke without fire.

But it's an interesting point you raise ... do you think my friend may have bought some counterfeits?

BNWT doesn't really tell you anything, they fake tags and boxes too.

Actually I've had 3 fakes a Polo Shirt, Shorts and a pair of sunglasses.

Fortunately the seller allowed me to send the Shorts back. I could have avoided (with hindsight) if I'd checked the photo carefully and compared them to photo from a retail website.

My favourite designer is Lacoste, but there are so many fakes about :(

Lacoste is properly the oldest brand copied, my brother travelled in Europe in his youth and brought back copies of Lacoste, Kappa and other sports brands, that is at least 25 years ago :)

I buy lots of clothes on eBay, and have not yet been disappointed, except on a few occasions where I have bought used clothes and it isn’t quite so good a condition as they describe.

By using eBay there is always a risk of being ripped off, but if we carefully check the sellers, its mostly great bargains to gain out there.

I bought my son a 'NEXT' jacket off e-bay it said BNWT, when it arrived it was all faulty and obviously from the 'seconds' pile !. I got in touch with the seller who re-funded my money.
I have also bought a load of 'GAP' kids clothes which were excellent. I personally think its the luck of the draw ! :-/

Matt is 100% correct with his sound advice - I actually posted similar advice in the TIPS section last week.

I bought a "brand new with tags" Armani Cap from EBAY for £10 (compared to £70 in the shops).

The cap was 100% FAKE - even has "made in china" on it - completely illegal but ebay allow it to happen and make millions out of it.

The seller had an excellent rating which means that he has ripped off so many customer who were simply too thick to notice that the cap was a piece of crap from the far east that must of cost £2 max to buy.

Tiffany has started proceedings to sue e-bay over fake items being sold as genuine.

According to an article on theRegister, Tiffany have been employing 2 people full-time to check e-bay and get them to take down auctions of dubious goods, and have managed to have 19000 individual sales removed. That's a lot of fake jewelry.
