My DS (not a darling at the moment), is badgering us constantly for a pair of the bloom Dr. Dre Beats headphones. Can someone please explain why they are the bees knees and a normal say Sony pair of headphones wont do the job of listening to music just as good. They are so expensive and even looking on ebay for second hand they are going for £60+.
Any help much appreciated.
Dr Dre Beats are over hyped and overpriced. If your DS desperately "needs" these rather than better quality/cheaper ones then DON'T buy from ebay! The web is full of fakes. You'd need to buy from a reputable store (eg amazon.co.uk, but not amazon marketplace iykwim) and expect to pay full price. If it's selling cheap then it's probably fake.
My DS wanted these about 18 months ago before you could buy them in most shops, but I refused to pay the price. He ended up getting Bose IE2's which look cooler and are far better quality, oh and much cheaper too. (He's since heard his friend's Beats and agrees that his are better)
Edited to add:
http://www.monstercable.com/headphones/
At the bottom of this page is a link in red to a list of sites which sell fake Monster products (mostly Dr Dre Beats). Alongside that is a link to help pages which will help you make sure you are buying a genuine product (should you wish to go down this road) They open up pop-ups so I can't link directly.

As an aside from my previous post.
Now I don't know how old your Ds is but if he wants them as a fashion accessory (which is IMO their only selling point really. They are not considered highly in audio reviews) then buying a cheap pair of fakes from ebay might be the way to go. The pair my DS had looked pretty good, came in a realistic box with okay sound quality for under £20 iirc. He wore them to school with the other [STRIKE]clones[/STRIKE] kids (most of whom later admitted had fakes) and then after a while the fad ended. Is this something he might go for?
