Virgin offer to cancel your sky account for you...do it yourself!

I was told by the Virgin salesman that they would cancel my Sky account for me as i switched. A few months later i had an overdue bill demanding i pay what was owed. I thought this was just an oversight but after a few calls i found i had to still pay the amount.
The thing is i have since discovered this has happened to most people i know who have done the same switch! This makes it hard for people to switch back to sky or their old provider as there are always records of unpaid bills. Is this happening everywhere? If so we could be talking about a lot of money unneccessarily being owed which can be avoided and save people another debt.
Has this happened to anyone else?

A salesman will tell you whatever you want to hear in order to secure an order-and his commission.
Your account, your bill, your potential debt, so always do it yourself.

I think Sky (and Virgin) require the account holder to cancel services. I can't see either of them accepting a cancellation from another company.
If you have any evidence of this I'd be complaining to Virgin about such sharp practice.
Not sure you'll get anywhere if it's just your word against their's though...
