Clearly the £40 shouldn't go back to Vodafone if the money was used fraudulently. They're basically back to square one now and might as well have not complained/got in touch with the bank in the first place.

Except they get to keep the compensation, and they'll get more compensation after the 3rd complaint that they are going to make about the refund to Vodafone.

What good is compensation if they just un-fix the problem that the compensation was awarded for anyway :p

It's Santander, I can almost live off the compensation they pay out for the regular screw ups they make.

Chances are they'll end up with more in compensation than the original £40 fraudulent payment!

This isn't filling me with confidence for the 123 account I've just moved to as my main bank account. :rotfl:

The second complaint is that the refunded money used in the fraud has been given back to Vodafone.

    - Fraudster uses £40 to top up Vodafone phone.
    - OP reports it.
    - OP gets money back + some compensation for the complaint.
    - £40 then goes back to Vodafone.

Clearly the £40 shouldn't go back to Vodafone if the money was used fraudulently. They're basically back to square one now and might as well have not complained/got in touch with the bank in the first place.

But if the chargeback has been rejected by Vodafone, which it sounds as though it has, Santander will have details of what Vodafone have supplied to support this rejection. The OP needs to call Santander to find out why they've been redebited again, depending on what Vodafone have supplied, it might not be fraudulent. If it is, then the OP will receive another refund. Sorted. It's how fraud is dealt with, nothing to make a complaint about really yet.

All this "what can i do next" stuff makes me laugh, why not ask the people who can actually answer the question ? I wouldn't be asking questions on here, i'd be on the phone to Santander.

With all due respect, I'd trust the information given by some of the people on here more than what is given by people employed by the bank.

I've worked in the fraud department of a bank. For 17 years. I can see what has probably happened in the OP's case.

The £40 transaction has been reclaimed by Vodafone. They will have their reasons for doing this. Santander will know what those reasons are. The OP needs to call them. It's not a complaint yet, it's part of the procedure when dealing with fraudulent transactions. If Vodafone have evidence which shows that the transactions are genuine, they will have sent this to Santander, if the evidence can be disputed by the OP, Santander will do one of two things, either credit the OP and send the transactions back to Vodafone again, or if it's not cost effective for them to do this, they will refund the OP.

It all depends on what Vodafone have to back up their rejection.

That's a funny statement to make - particularly since none of us have actually heard the story from the bank's point of view. Just because someone has posted on MSE doesn't make them trustworthy, and to say people employed by banks are less trustworthy than some random internet poster is just ludicrous.

People take time out of their day to post on MSE and therefore clearly have an interest in helping others. Sometimes when you call a call centre or go into a bank you get the feeling they just want to get rid of you.

People on MSE advise to cancel CPA and many people employed by the bank don't have the slightest clue how to do that or that it's even possible.

There's clearly an issue when you get better advice from random forum goers than people employed by the bank.

You have obviously got a precise insight into the skills of many people employed by the bank.

None of us know what the OP told the bank and what was discussed. None of us know what advice was given by bank employees.
