I would be happy to pay that. I'm after a iPhone 5 on contract in October time so am hoping a new one comes out so they a little cheaper

Except they are still supporting the 3GS (which makes 4 models currently supported), so there is still life in the 4. I think it's pretty safe to assume it will get iOS 7 and at least one major revision after that, at the least.

Depends what they add I guess. The 4 is the last of the single core iPhones so it may get left behind or miss out on some nice new features.

Get your friend to contact Vodafone, or go into a Voda shop and ask them to process the request. It's simply a matter of plugging into iTunes to get the unlock after its processed, if its their old contract phone it will be free to do as well.

Well, I have the phone now but I'm at a loss as to what I need to do next. As far as I know they had a sim only contract with Vodafone and I think before that they had a monthly contract. I asked about unlocking it but they didn't really know I don't think. Obviously there is no sim card in the phone either.

What do I need to do next? Where would I get it unlocked? I want to stay with giffgaff, my current provider so I'm assuming I will need to get a new micro card for the phone from them, but will I need to put in a new sim card to get the phone unlocked?

You may have realised I'm not really au fait with what needs to be done!

It's likely that the iPhone 4 won't run iOS 7 so I'd go for the iPhone 4S or wait to see if Apple do on the "budget" iPhone front later in the year.

I'm fairly sure that the original owner needs to contact voda to get the phone unlocked for you.

Try getting them to filling in this form

    http://campaigns.vodafone.co.uk/UnlockCodeRequestForm/

If it was Vodafone they will then unlock it for you.

The Iphone 4 is no more than 4 years old, and probably bought on a 18 month / 2 year contract, so it should not be hard to check bank statements...

I am in the exact situation. I am coming to the end of my contract and I was looking at the S3. That was until a friend of mine showed me his newly purchased Google Nexus 4 recently. It is the business and is virtually identical in specification to the S3. I am wanting to trim down my costs and as I currently have a contract and every month I underuse mu allowance by a colossal margin I was put onto Giffgaff. With it being a sim free service no more contracts. And you can adjust what you use every month. There are loads of different Giffgaff tariffs and they are fully adaptable. I crunched a few numbers and if I bought the Nexus 4 16 gig handset (£280), then went onto the the £7.50 p/m Giffgaff tariff (that one is the closest to my actual monthly usage) over a period of 24 months I would save about £50 over getting the S3 on the cheapest contract tariff that I had seen (T Mobile basic internet @ £21per month). Obviously you have to buy the Nexus 4 upfront. For some it is better to have the cost of the handset built into the deal. By the way. I currently have a Galaxy Ace as well and am also frustrated with it's internal memory. The Nexus 4 is about 6 months newer than the S3 as well. Also with it being a Google product it gets the Android updates first.

BTW if the phone works on Vodafone it should work on Ovivo, a new mobile company that offers a free, yes free basic entitlement, and they use the Vodafone network. See other posts on this forum. You would need to port your number across but this is fairly simple

I have been dithering about getting either an iphone 4S/5 or Galaxy S3 for ages now - what stops me is that I really don't want to have a contract (or pay huge amounts for insurance). I currently have a Galaxy Ace, which is great but the lack of internal memory means it is a pain!

Anyway, a friend of mine has an iphone 4 they are selling and I thought that might be an inexpensive way to have an iphone and not spend tons on insurance either....or am I wasting money buying an iphone 4 now?

Buy an iPhone 4 for £130 or so, get a GiffGaff contract for £12.50 per month giving you unlimited texts and data plus 250 minutes talk time and you're sorted.
