Also, is there a way of checking it is that before purchasing a battery?
Thanks
Open up your case and look for a watch/button type battery on the motherboard. You can easily replace it yourself, it's usually a CR2032 I think.
EDIT: I seem to be a bit behind today "She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

When the black screen appears the following message displays:
Floppy Disk(s) fail (40) CMOS checksum error - defaults loaded
Does this confirm the liklehood it's the battery or does this hint at another issue?

Yes, the first thing to check for a CMOS checksum error would also be replacing the CMOS battery."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Hiya,
Definitely sounds like the CMOS battery is too low on power to hold the settings.
I got my last one from Tesco's and the one before from Morrisons. Not sure how much they were because the cost vanished in with the total. No more than a couple of quid though. If you get charged kmore, don't get it and shop around.
One final point, before you go, check the battery you need (open your case, look on the motherboard for the battery - it is about the size of a ten pence piece - cerfully lever it out and look at the back, it should say what type it is). Once you have it out, since you are replacing it anyway, you can leave it out.0
