Bank stopped money going into my account

Please someone help as i am at a loss of what to do. I am a student and recieve a bursary. In order to properly manage my budget i requested that my Wrking Tax credit go into my saving account rather than my current account - no prob there. Things go wrong. Unbeknown to me the bank (Santander) had put a mail block on my saving account as an item of mail was returned to them, apparently this mail stop was put on in 2005, i had no knowledge of this. As a consequence of this mail stoppage the bank refused to let my monthly payment of working tax credit go into my account?? I didn't know anything about this until i checked my account a week after the date my monthly payment should have been paid. Upon phoning HMRC i was advised that they had stopped my money due to the bank refusing to accept the payment. I have had to get the bank to remove the mail stop then get HMRC to restart my schedule. Unhelpfully HMRC can not advise how long this restarting of payment schedule will take to be processed, i may get money 3weeks late. As an indirect consequence of this farce that the bank have created HMRC automatically informed all my other benefits (Housing and Council tax) that i am no longer in receipt of working families tax - presumably because id be in receipt of too much money to be entitled to it and i am being fraudulent and trying to steal thousands of pounds out of the government coffers - this has now resulted in all my benefits being stopped whilst an investigation takes place. All i wanted to do was manage my funds better and request that my money go into another one of my accounts. I will suffer as a consequence of this ridiculous action of the bank: as i have no money, bills go out at the beginning of the month, rent is due 2nd week of the month and now its half term and the kids and i wanted to have a bit of fun in the sun. What can i do? I am so powerless against these two giants: HMRC and Santander, but i've done absolutely nothing incorrectly but am being penalised. Please please can someone help i want some justice at this situation

I'm not sure I understand what a mail block is, do you mean that they tried to send mail to you and your address was incorrect and as a consequence they closed your account in 2005? How did you not notice until now?0

I'm confused how its taken this long to realise the problem.0

OP can you add some paragraphs to the post, be easier to read.0

Probably the bank cannot confirm the A/C Holders Address and has put a temporary block on the account to prevent fraud.
You seriously need to break your text up as like many, I won't bother reading if it becomes a struggle...I have numerous qualifications in Business and Finance, Accountancy, Health and Safety and am now studying Law.
Don't rely on anything I write as it may be wrong!!!0 -
Are both accounts (current & savings) with Santander ?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I suspect that the savings account may have been made dormant.
That is all that I can think of which would block a credit.
OP can either toddle off down with suitable ID and address confirmation to unblock it or advise HMRC to pay their benefits into the current account
but on the other hand we are dealing with Santandr here!!0 -
The OP means that the bank sent her a letter and it was returned to them. Thus, to prevent fraud, the bank immediately stopped all mail for that account going out to her. It's common, and happened to my company last year with HSBC. The mail was delivered to the wrong address in the first place & instead of putting it back into the box unblemished, to hopefully be delivered correctly the next time around, they scribbled on the address & wrote 'return to sender - not at this address' on it.
It is a savings account, therefore not receiving an annual statement could be missed. I certainly wouldn't notice, especially as I bank online as well as receiving paper statements.
OP I'm very sorry about this. Have you tried applying for a crisis loan? Speak to the council & they may be able to help you sort your money out a bit quicker or tide you over. Also try & get a planned overdraft in place with your bank to cover you should any DD's etc go out. You wouldn't want charges from the bank on top of this mess.
Seems like a silly thing to say, but you can't do anything about it until Tuesday so try not to worry & have a good weekend with your kids. There are plenty of things you could do that don't cost anything.

Even if there was a mail block - surely that would not block credits to the account would it?0

Just trying to help a wee bit by rearranging.
Please someone help as i am at a loss of what to do?

You will have to wait until Tuesday when the banks open - duplicating much of your post whilst not answering others will not help you in the matter.
I asked whether you had used the savings account or whether it was dormant.
If the account is dormant you need to provide ID and address confirmation to get the account open again.0
