Car Giant - Missing V5C (logbook), HPI Check ok!

Options
Hi Experts

I am planning to buy a car from Car Giant, the logbook (V5C) is missing but the bloke at the phone was kind enough to give me the MOT Test Number and using that I could see that the MOT Tests were fine. Also using that I got the VIN Number and could also see that the HPI Report (though without the V5C Reference number) also came out as clean.

I have been told by Car Giant that if I go to DVLA office before 5PM, I can get the car taxed immediately! Is that correct?

Should I be worried about something else or do I need to take any other precaution?

Many thanks!

I would never buy a car without the V5, no matter who is selling it.

  • What could possibly go wrong? HPI Report is Ok! Pardon my ignorance - even I wouldn't have bought the car normally in such a scenario..But given that they provided MOT Test Number and hence I was able to see the MOT history and also get an HPI Check done..Am just wondering what specific thing I should be worried about!

I think it would be fine - Cargiant are hardly criminals although they will often try and avoid doing things themselves. Ring the DVLA if you need peace of mind.
    Can I help?

From a friends experience, the answer is no. He had to apply for a new V5 and wait 6 weeks for it to arrive - the time scale was what the DVLA told him when he phoned to ask if he could tax it at a local office.

The current fashion is for "logbook loans" which do not show on a HPI check, but do account for no V5...........
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))
  • Oh! So you mean that there might be still some outstanding loan on the vehicle ! In that case I should probably take some sort of letter or assurance from car giant ..

I can't think of a car good enough to risk having it being towed by the bailiffs when the previous owner stops paying on the logbook loan. Can't you find a similar car elsewhere? This is a big, big risk.

And what are you going to show them, i always thought the new keeper needed the green slip form the V5 to tax a vehicle

And some of the HPI checks i have done need the V5 document number entering to do a full check, also the address of the previous owner, how have they done that with no V5

As far as i am concerned no V5 no sale , there are plenty of cars out there, and some car dealers will tell you anything for a sale
  • Just a V10 and V62 and in theory they would issue the tax disc immediately..

That won't stop the repo guys from taking it if there is a log book loan.

I'm sure you also noticed the disclaimer on the HPI website that states if there is no V5C then all bets are off with regard to guaranteeing the status of the vehicle.
