Cornwall in July

Hi All,

I’m planning a trip to Cornwall in mid July and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction (and I don’t mean West J)?

I’m not familiar with the area really, having only been there on childhood holidays quite some years ago.

I’m looking to rent a nice, reasonably priced cottage to sleep two (me and the boyfriend), preferably non smoking and no animals for a week. There are a few sites online which seem to offer holiday cottages but what I’m getting a bit stuck on is which area to look in.

We are a long drive away wherever we go in Cornwall so distance doesn’t really make much of a difference to us (what’s another hour on top of five?!). We are looking to stay somewhere where there are things to do/places to visit (happy to drive around exploring, within reason) and a nice beach but preferably somewhere that is a little quieter than the norm and not completely overrun with children. Obviously with it being the school summer holidays I realise there will be more families with kiddies around than normal which is fine, I just don’t want to stay in your typical seaside town that’s packed out.

Does anyone have any suggestions with regard to area, and also for reputable websites to book on?

Thanks in advance,

Daisy

Reputable holiday cottage companies (I've been with all of these, never had a problem with any of them):

As for which area, I always head to the Far West (Penzance and the Lizard area). It shouldn't be too busy mid-July, but a lot of private schools break up in early-mid July so they're the kids we normally encounter. It's not as busy as August, certainly.

There's loads of cottages that are in hidden away places, especially those sleeping two, so you'll have a wide choice of those that aren't in busy towns.

I agree, avoid Looe, Newquay, Bude type places. They are lovely but not what you are looking for. Lizard and Penzance are beautiful, with beautiful beaches (Marazion is by St Micheals Mount and is lovely and safe and big!!).

I grew up in cornwall and love taking my children home to the grandparents so we can explore. We are lucky and have one set at each end of the county.
    Enjoy your holiday.

Thanks so much, I will have a look as you've both suggested. I have lovely memories of Cornwall as a youngster so I'm really looking forward to going back!

Wherever you stay will be lovely, Cornwall is fantastic. The only advice I'd give is not to go to, under any circumstances, to Lands End. It's an absolute money pit and you get complete cr*p in return. Others will back me up on this.

Its not only Lands End which is a moneypit. It applies to every honeypot destination in Cornwall. Take plenty of change for car parks, you will need it.

Or spend a bit of time planning, and use tesco vouchers etc. I wouldn't fancy eden project in school holidays/summer. Everywhere is expensive nowadays.

See if you can borrow NT cards, so lovely places and free parking on coastal path car parks if you have the sticker and a valid card.

Better still join the NT and if you go through Quidco you can get 20% cashback. You also get 3 months free membership and a free gift if you pay by direct debit.
There are some lovely NT properties in Cornwall, and the car parks will be free.
    Have a lovely holiday :)

My boyfriend and I stayed here http://www.stmichaels-holidaycottage.co.uk/ last summer. I spent a long time researching places to stay online before I found this. It was a really pretty cottage right opposite St Michael's Mount. Marazion is a quieter town than some on the tourist trail but also close to St Ives, Penzance and Mousehole. We didn't have a car with us and relied on public transport but the cottage had a parking space available at a b&b nearby. Hope you find what you're looking for!

I lived in cornwall for the last 2 years, the cost of living and holidaying is expensive. If you want to save money try John Fowlers they have holiday cottages on a site in Hayle.
The beach at Hayle Towans is beautiful, my cornish friends loved that beach.
Praa sands is an amazing beach too, heartlands in Camborne is an amazing place if you have kids or even if you don't they often have stuff on.
Don't forget to grab a Philps pasty!!

Ooh you lucky things, Cornwall is my favourite place, but it's 7 hours from us, and having a 10 month old we aren't going this year, it's far too long.

Look at brook edge cottage in Port Isaac (where they film doc Martin) it's reasonable in price, and is just tucked one street back from the harbour. There isn't parking with it, but you can buy a weekly ticket for the car park nearby.
