Using a smart TV for browsing the web?

I have played quite a few Youtube/IplayerBlinkbox/Lovefilm videos and not had a problem with any. My LG tv was only released in April so maybe they have fixed that problem. Have you tried updating your software recently?

You can play video via the Apps ok, but when you try to play some videos via the browser, that's when you get problems. It's to do with Flashplayer, and LG have admitted they cannot upgrade beyond, I think, version 8.

I tried to watch some back BBC railway programmes recently and none of them would play, although the TV will play iPlayer programmes.

Try on your own set and see if you can get any of these to play:

Yes that plays, perhaps it is nothing to do with flash player 8 but more to do with the new tvs having the latest flash player. Maybe I have the latest flash player but it won't be upgraded so mine will not work properly once flash player is upgraded again.

  • When I try to watch the above, it comes up "Flashplayer needs upgrading", and then "unable to download".

Flash Player seems to be updated (not upgraded) about once a month!
I've had my SONY SMART TV for close to a year now and it receives it's own updates from the web. I have no problem playing those Railway videos.
Perhaps Poppasmurf_bewdley's TV set needs a similar update?

I have been in John Lewis and another shop and they pretty much confirmed that certain videos will not play so you do not get a full browsing experience. As for the LG I was told it does not have all the video apps the Samsung has (4od,itv etc.) becaue Samsung have exclusive rights to those apps.

The guy in JL also showed me a small box that you can plug into the TV and it converts it into a fully functional internet TV. I think he said it would give you Google Chrome, but I did not get the full details. It was over a hundred quid.

Incidentally I cannot believe how good the 3D is. John Lewis on Oxford Street had an expensive LG on display and I stood in front of it watching things fly out of the TV towards me? :j

I had no idea 3D was so good. My only experience of 3D was some film on TV when I was a kid and I watched it with 3d glasses that came with the newspaper. That was rubbish. I would never buy a TV without 3D now.

My only issue is whether to go with the 42 inch or wait until the 47 inch LGs come down in price. My TV will be 8 feet or more from the sofa.

Internet shopping i good, but you can't beat a trip to the shops to appreciate things.

One thing I have noticed is the price of the HDMI cables in the shops, absolutely scandalous (£40) when you buy one off Ebay orAmazon for below £1 or this one that I bought for £3.99 (works perfectly with my 3D DVD player. Anyone know if these cables are any different?

I just noticed that the electrical stores online shops are also a lot cheaper.
