Cheques suited me better because:-
I can choose which account to pay it into
DWP doesn't need to know
DWP can't seize its money back if they foul up causing me an overdraft.
The bank doesn't get my NI number and splatter it over my statements.0 -

How does the DWP 'not need to know'? Don't they send out the cheques?
My bank does NOT 'splatter my NI number over my statements'. I don't get paper statements anyway, I do it all online.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

No, the DWP does not "need" to know the account details. But then you won't get it paid.
DWP can't "seize" money back from an account once its already been credited
Seeing as the bank already has access to every other detail about you and your finances I cant see what problem there is in them having your NI number on the payments. They probably have it on file anyway.0
