There are still a few places where you can 'cash a cheque'. Some shops will still do it. I would guess she has some kind of an informal arrangement with a local shop. But that's only guessing. There has been no answer so far to 'where/how does she receive her other money?'

Although that was possible at one time, I thought that procedure was now impossible as you have to pay it into the bank account of the person named on the cheque?

(Speaking of which, I have just written out two cheques to pay for a holiday. I can't remember the last time I wrote out one cheque, let alone two!!).

I;m half getting the impression that the payment is £100 therefore she possibly has a spouse who is getting the other £100. And also get the imprssion that she is maybe cashing the cheque at a cash place and they are charging her £10 for the priveledge.

I could be completely wrong of course, but it all seems a bit strange

You can get a cheque made out to cash? I've had to do it a couple of times with my employer and just took it into a branch and they hand me cash same day rather than waiting 3-5 working days for it to clear.

True, but there's no way that DWP will be issuing Winter Fuel Allowance payments this way....

.. in ye olden days before the preponderance of ATMs you'd get your spending money out by writing a 'cash' cheque out and taking it into your branch (working hours 9.30 to 15.30 mon-Friday only)

(god that makes me sound old remembering doing that - and I'm only in my early 50's !)

Anyway, whatever she is doing.....isn't it just easier to open a bank account?

She can have it paid into the same bank she has to pay her cheques in to cash them. Surely that has to be done via a bank account?

the op is talking about DWP cheques the old giro they can be cashed at post office no account needed

Yes though there just called cheques now since allience and leicester took over girobank they still use them for ppl who dont have accounts or when they cant pay by BACS but they are phasing them out completley

thanks all lots of info and I too remember writing cash to to get cash and the giro bank where you received a weekly statement. How things are getting more complex and less customer friendly!!! lol!

I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if the DWP have spent money sending your friend a letter to say that they will no longer be paying her by cheque without also suggesting some alternatives and/or asking her to provide details of a bank account or similar to receive the money in the same letter.

I'd suggest you ask your friend to show you the letter and see what options it suggests.

I can't see that the alternatives are going to be any more inconvenient than cashing a cheque

the letter gives no info it says if you don't have a bank account let us know then we may have an alternative way to pay you. obviously a big secret!! lol!
