What business does your firm do and is it American in origin. It just seems thay are getting stressed out about their employees getting stressed.
I think it unlikely your firm would get sued for not doing enough. The action you are taking does seem to be a little out of step with other firms

No the company is not american base. it is in fact based in Germany. Our subsiduary group is involved in the manufacture of car parts for major car companies.

Before embarking and writing a company policy regarding the no smoke site i conducted a free trial for those who wanted to participate to see whether or not there would be a demand for this product. The result was that not one person didn't find that it helped them not smoke whilst at work.

The company is heavily unionised hence the overdoing the help maybe?? In the past, the company has fallen foul of hte unions on more than one occassion to thier detriment. As to being out of step with other firms. I know a lot of major firms are buying this product in bulk for their employees, whether they are selling it on to them or not i dont know. I even heard on the grapevine that the US Government are trialling it for the military whilst away on operational tours- or maybe our company is taking the lead rather than following everyone else.

Mortgagemamma- I take your point about the gym as a stress reliever and it sounds like a brilliant idea. I'm not sure if i could get the company (or the vast majority of the workforce) on board though as i dont honestly feel that it would be used. We are not ignoring the need for stress councelling however. The councelling mentioned in previous posts is actually a long standing thing and not primarily aimed at smokers. As a company, we take a proactive approach to not just alleviating stress but actually trying to stop it before it starts-a philosophy which appears to working.

I would say that around 90% are manual worker, 5% are purely office based and the rest a mixture of both

Which is probably why there are more smokers - In my experience there tends to be a higher proportion of manual workers who smoke as opposed to office workers
