Hi
Just a quick question
I am on occupational health advisor and as part of support given to employees due to the smoke free policy coming into force soon, we are selling Nicogel-a cigarette replacement to employees at cost price. I have heard from someone today that it is available on prescription. Is this true??
I was given to believe that it wasn't lisenced as a medication (hence the ability to sell it on)
Thanks

Nicotine replacement therapy has a pretty dismal sucess rate. Which is not surprising as you are trying to treat a perceived nicotine addiction with more nicotine. in fact in many cases more nicotine than the fags.
Of course nicotine is not really addictive but why give more to cure it? it just doesnt workWho I am is not important. What I do is.0 -

Nicogel is a cigarette replacement and not a nicotine replacement. It contains only tobacco and therefore is not meant as an aid to giving up smoking, but as a replacement for a cigarette for time when you cant smoke ie. workplace, public transport etc.0 -
.
Of course nicotine is not really addictive
Nicotine is in fact highly addictive which is why smoking is so often hard to give up0 -
What do you mean its not nicotine replacement therapy. it is a nicotine gel that you rub on your skin when you cant smoke. I know it says it contains tobacco but that is where the nicotine comes from.
Nicotine itself is not highly addictive and is in fact hardly addictive
if its so addictive why give more in the way of nicotine patches or gum etc. You dont give a heroin addict more heroin do you?
How is it some one who smokes say 20 a day can get on a plane or go to the cinema for a few hours with no physiological effects.
How does some one go to sleep for a few hours without needing to wake up and top up with a fag.
When you give up the nicotine is out of the system in 48 hours yet the cravings go on because it is a psychological not chemical aaddiction if you want to call it any sort of addiction but that is not down to the nicotine
In NLP terms it is because you have anchored the smoking with your morning coffee, the telephone call, the pint in the pub and so on.
if nicotine is so hard to give up how is it that people can do it by will power because that doesnt seem to work so well for other drugs.
Nicotine is a very nasty chemical, It is in fact an insecticide and it would not take more than a couple of drops to kill a human. it acts as an irritant so does not in fact relieve stress but it is NOT strongly chemically addictive.Who I am is not important. What I do is.0 -

nicotine is the most addictive drug in the world. It is more addictive than heroin, crack, cocaine etc...
but alan carr does say that you shouldnt give NRT to someone trying to give up smoking. Its like giving an alcoholic alcohol to give up0 -

I agree with you thatthe cravings people get are partly psychological but are also partly due to a chemical reaction/signal in the brain. In actaul fact it has been proven that that used correctly Nicotine replacement thaerpy is an effective AID to quitting, it also requires an awful lot of will power. The recommended time for using patches for instance is 3 months on a gradually weaning down programme. The nicotine present in the NRT is in actaul fact lower than you would find in a cigarette hence the will power.
Nicotine as you rightly say is a man made chemical which is not found in tobacco but is added ddurinng the prcess of manufacturing tobacco products. Nicogel is made from purely from tobacco (along with some emulsifying agents t make it suitable for gel) Itis not to b used as an aid to quitting smoking which is clearly stated by the manufacturer- however it has been found that using it increases your chances of quitting. TBH, i blieve that it is not been marketed as such due to costs in lisencing.
Heroin addicts are weaned of heroin usually by using methodone which is in the same class as heroin drug wise-in fact it is more addictive. Again the same priciple is applied with weaning down slowly to not only beat the heroin addiction but also the methadone and other cocktail of drugs such as diazepam. I agree that there is also some psychological aspects to this also
As a trained smoking cessation councillor, i have employed these techniques with many people successfully

If you call somewhere betwen 7% and 14 % effective I believe the 7% figures are from later surveys Still outdone by hypnosis and in first place for quitting is being admitted to hospital with either cancer or a heart attack
it also requires an awful lot of will power. The recommended time for using patches for instance is 3 months on a gradually weaning down programme. The nicotine present in the NRT is in actaul fact lower than you would find in a cigarette hence the will power.
I think a 24 hour patch contains Nicotine equivalent to 120 fags yes it may be less than an insomniac chain smoker
Nicotine as you rightly say is a man made chemical which is not found in tobacco but is added ddurinng the prcess of manufacturing tobacco products.
I didnt say it was man made because it is NOT It is one of natures insecticides and is natural.

This is down to the NHS who know it might be a rival to their somewhat ineffective methods

No the NHS have banned the claims for marketing purposes

My husband smoked for many years before he met me. When he met me I made it plain I could never be with a smoker, three weeks later he said "OK love, if it bothers you that much I'll stop" and he did. Just like that. Never smoked another fag since and I know it was a big sacrifice because he loved smoking (obviously he loved me more). I was absolutely astonished at his will power. He never once complained of cravings and I know he never cheated as I can smell it a mile off. If only it could be that simple for everyone. I have a friend in his fifties, chain smoker, came to visit me weekend befor last travelled from eastbourne to lancashire, changed trains twice. Got off the train in preston, shaking like a leaf cos he needed a fag. Made me cringe. What on earth posesses people to smoke is beyond me, especially with all the warnings these days. Bloody madness.I am a Mortgage Adviser

Certainly not chemically addictive but can be classed as psychologically addictive. not remotely in the league of crack or heroin and way off barbituates and amphetamines etc. These both leave you with severe physiological withdrawl symptoms when you stop. nicotine does not.
but alan carr does say that you shouldnt give NRT to someone trying to give up smoking. Its like giving an alcoholic alcohol to give up
Well when on earth should NRT be given. this is exactly my point it is like giving alchohol to an alchoholic So when should it be used? Some surveys are putting NRTs effectiveness at little more than 3% above a placebo.Who I am is not important. What I do is.0 -
Smokers cost this country enough with all the smoking related diseases, I dont think smoking cessation products should be provided free on the NHS, its just more wasted money on them - especially if the success rate is low
IMO smokers should also be deprioritised for NHS treatment. If they can't look after themselves properly and insist on willfully damaging their own body and making themselves ill why the hell should the rest of us have to foot the bill?I am a Mortgage Adviser
