I bought the Lidl seed once, it wasn't bad and the birds liked it but there was quite a bit of chaff in it as you say. One bonus though was the fine crop of sunflower seedlings that popped up in the bed directly underneath, I transplanted half a dozen of them into a more convenient location and got six huge sunflower heads in the end. When the flowers went over I let the seeds ripen and dry out, then sliced them up like cake and put them out for the birds. The birds lived them too. So I think I got my money's worth, though it did take a long time. :)

I buy Johnston & Jeff mixed wild bird seed from my local pet shop and he gives me a deal as I buy so much. I buy 6 x 25kg bags per month and he charges £10 per bag. His normal price is £13. It's all seed and no twig or shell. All the birds eat it including, jays, wood peckers, pheasant & partridge. At dusk four rabbits eat it and at night a fox, a badger and a hedgehog eat it.

My place is a bit of a sanctuary for little creatures as everyone around me shoots anything that moves for the fun of it. I also buy old apples from the local farm shop. £1 for a big tray. They usually sell them for horses but the blackbirds and the fox eat them at my place.

Home bargains sells lots of different bird foods at far lower prices than Wilkinsons. I buy trolleyloads full from there.

For comparison.........Jusr bought 2x7kg's bags of mixed bird seed local supplier. £7.50 total.delivered. So.... 53p kg. 20kg quantity would be 45p kg. BandM in their 12kg bags...39p kg. I always look out to see if they have sweetcorn in them.

You didnt mention if having sweetcorn in was a good or bad thing. Anyone able to assist in that question?

I saw that, I think it was similar to the one in B&M with lots of grain in it which always attracts the collared doves. I wanted some smaller seeds for the smaller birds which the Lidl one seemed to have.

I am not sure if the Wilko one may be of inferior quality, perhaps says on the bag not for human consumption, not sure as I didn't buy any.

I get sunflower hearts loose for £1.85/kg in two local farm shops - they were £34.00 last time I bought a 20kg sack, but I usually just fill a carrier bag each week.

Very cheap seed mixes and fat balls can have all sorts of fillers added, including sawdust, though the prices of some branded mixes in small packets is just extortionate. Best deals online but watch the delivery charges. And be sure to store where rodents can't get to them!

i bought the stuff in post 2. It looks ok but i regularly see great tits andsparrows discarding some of it-although collared doves sweep it up afterwards.
