Go along to your local IAM and see if they fit in with your ideals and you fit in with them. Some IAM branches are really good, others are just a forum for motoring whingers. The man without a signature.0

Always wanted to learn advanced driving to become a safer and more Eco friendly driver.
Good for you.
But am worried about the cost as I notice a lot of providers charge a yearly membership, are there any that don't?
Which providers have you looked at? The two obvious ones are the IAM and RoADAR. Both of those have an annual membership cost if you want to remain a member, but there's no obligation to do so.0 -
I have passed and belonged to both the IAM and ROSPA.
Having passed the test you don't have to stay a member of the organisation if you don't want to. If you do then there is an annual subscription, same as any other organisation.
ROSPA is better in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback, but don't you need to remain a member to get the insurance discount?0 -
Don't do it just for the insurance discount!
It's no longer competitive (ie you get cheaper insurance elsewhere anyway without the advanced driving qualification)0 -

If your insurance company offers a discount for members of an advanced driving organisation (or, in the case of the IAM you find you can get cheaper insurance through their Surety scheme) then from a money saving point of view isn't it simply a question of whether the discount you're offered is more or less than the annual membership of the organisation?0 -
Started on the IAM course then ended up doing the RoSPA one.
Might be my own experience but the RoSPA guys weren't as far up their own a**ses0 -

The general consensus is that there is more difference between individual local groups of the two organisation than there is between the two organisations as a whole, so I wouldn't expect your experience to be typical. Common advice for someone looking to do some advanced driving of this sort is to contact both their local groups - IAM and RoSPA - and see which they feel they'll get on with best - which is essentially what you ended up doing.
Glad you found someone you were happier with. Hope you enjoyed it.0 -
Is there any advanced driving courses which you don't need a car.0
