Nationwide card reader

I needed a cr2032 battery a while back so I took it out of my Nationwide card reader, there's 2 in it.
So I managed to use my account online using my memorable information until today, when, after transferring £1,000 from my BOS Vantage account to my Halifax reward account then to my FlexDirect account.
When I tried to transfer the £1,000 back to my Vantage account, previously I had transferred £500 twice, I suddenly get a screen insisting I use my card reader.
So after a search I came across an old RBS card reader which still had life in it and used that.
Surprisingly, or not, it worked and I was able to transfer my £1,000 back to my Vantage account.
So is there now a limit on how much can be transferred from a Nationwide account without using the card reader or will I now have to use it all the time?
Also when it asks the amount you are transferring you have to enter 1000.00, not 1000 for £1,000.
Took me a little while to figure out why is was refusing to transfer the £1,000.:D

Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:

All the card readers from all UK banks are interchangeable.
Nationwide's requests for use of the card reader are completely random. They usually, though not always, ask for the card reader when you set up a new payee. They usually, though not always, allow subsequent payments without the need for the card reader. There is no real pattern to it - - which is re-assuring because consters are most unlikely to be able to devise a scam if the security measures are random.0 -

I think I've read that HSBC's system is different, but I suspect you're right about the others. I prefer to use the reader that goes with the card because the keys are then identified with the correct symbols, but it's not difficult to work out if I do use a different one.0 -
Yes, HSBC's system is different - - it isn't actually a card reader, but just a number generator. I don't know of any other bank that has deployed the HSBC system.0

There does seem to be some logic to it - I typically never get the card reader request with NW as I use it to login (easier than remembering memorable information), however I got it yesterday assumably because I was sending 10K to a payee that I've only ever sent upto 1K to before. Today I did the same and it didn't ask, so I'm going to assume it now things its more 'normal' (or perhaps theres a time frame)0

If you read the screen carefully it does actually tell you what to enter, but I doubt most people will get the meaning and just type 1000 and then why it doesn't work, before noticing the reader actually says "10.00" on the next attempt.NowRetired wrote: »Also when it asks the amount you are transferring you have to enter 1000.00, not 1000 for £1,000.0 -

You could be right that there is a system to it if you use the car reader to log in. I never use it myself for that purpose (logging in with AccountUnity) and it's completely random when they ask me to use it.
For example, I could set up, and pay £1 to, my most recent new payee without needing the card reader. I can't remember that I ever could set up a payee without the reader before.
2 minutes later, after the £1 had arrived ok the other end, I sent a few hundred pounds to the same payee. Card reader was required this time.
Another 5 minutes later, I then sent several thousand to an existing payee. No card reader required.0 -
I've found I always need to use it when paying a new payee, no matter how small the amount, but then only large amounts to existing payees require it.
To be honest, if I were designing a security system that's more or less how I'd do it - extra authentication for anything new or large, but not required otherwise.0 -
A card reader doesn't like it particularly when you take out and put in the card too often. It is more convenient to leave your card permanently in the slot having pressed 'on/off' as the wear on contacts is eliminated.
However that's where the designers of the Barclays version of the reader goofed because you can't switch it 'on' with the card already inserted and the only way to kick it into life is to take the card out and put it in again. It's a good job therefore that card readers are interchangeable and I use the 'Nationwide' type with my Barclays debit card left in the slot......under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -
Fortunately for me a card reader was required when a scammer managed to get into my Nationwide account yesterday to set up a dd for ITunes.0
