There are rowing boats on the Derwent at Matlock Bath for the first time in a few years. If the weather is bad, Peak Minining Museum is interesting (you don't have to go on the mine trip)

Wirksworth is a wonderful little nearby town to wander round and soak up the history, as is the better known Cromford. Cromford Canal is lovely with a decent chance of seeing a water vole if you start at Whatstandwell and go south. Lumsdale is another bit of quiet free history (steep steps but not a lot of it)

Chatsworth whilst a honey pot can lose vast numbers of people in the gardens and on the estate, you could park at the Calton Lees car park and picnic by the river - and then on up to Curbar and Baslow Edges.

The Monsal Trail... or the High Peak Trail, especially from the car park near Pikehall and walking up to Mininglow and back, or the High Peak Trail from Black Rocks above Cromford - gives you a fascinating view of the Derwent Gorge.

Stanton Moor to see the Nine Ladies Circle.

The Green Way Caf! for lunchtime eating, and/or The Loaf at either Matlock Green or Crich, or Peli Deli, or Caudwell's Mill at Rowsley.

Personally for a mid-week short break in Matlock I'd think twice about going as far as Castleton/the Caverns.

Sorry to hijack this thread but we are thinking of spending a few days in the area in September. Can anyone tell me that the current situation is regarding Riber Castle?

Riber castle is being turned into apartments - - there is a footpath that goes around the front of the castle - so you still have access to the view over matlock...

they have started work on riber caste - they started a few years ago - but then it all stopped - but they have started again now and there are windows in the castle, not been up close for a while so see how fast it is progressing..
