booked a few days in matlock

have booked a few days in matlock (self catering) with hubby in june.
What do people recommend as 'must see/do' things around the area?
We will have a car. I'm not so clever with heights & not too fit so alas the cable car & caving are out.
Ideas/recommendations would be great tho :)

Many thanks :)

    what dates ?

Matlock Bath - stroll along the riverside and get fish and chips

Cromford - explore Cromford Mill / walk along the canal, sit by the Mill Pond - Scarthin Books is a must - an aladin's cave.

Matlock - the park again nice for a stroll, often brass bands on a sunday afternoon - Cafe in the Park does lovely snacks to sit and watch the world go by, lots of antique shops and other touristy places to browse,

Bakewell - tourist trap - very busy - Bakewell Pudding

    Chatsworth House

    Tram Museum at Crich

    - it depends how far out you want to go really and what interests you - walking round towns / shops / cafes

looking at historic houses / mills

    driving through dramatic scenery

let us know more and i will post suggestions...

    Bakewell and Chatsworth..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Crich Tramway museum, it's brilliant :)

There's not much walking involved on speedwell cavern. Once you've done a flight of steps down, it's a boat ride.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?
  • Take the waters, which are acquired taste.
  • we are going 10-13 which is midweek - I'm really not crowd friendly so trying to avoid the manicness of weekends & proper summer :)

will prob hit nottingham on way home

we like free and cheap :) history stuff is good as well as kinetic things (I hate museums that are all behind glass windows so you can't touch)

the mill, tram museum & speedwell cavern sounds good :)

we do shopping and cafes too :) I like looking at strange and unusual rather than highstreets so much. Tho I'm a pauper so can't afford to buy too often lol

It's matlock bath which is full of the motorbikes and has the river running through it, think of a seaside resort without the sea (amusments, fish and chips, tourist types shops) ,if you are staying in matlock then you will be a mile or so away from this area. Not sure what attractions you like, but plenty of walks, parks, pubs and places to grab food nearby.
    Hopeful optimistic.

If you're interested in history you may be interested in the village of Eyam, known as Plague Village. The story goes that the plague arrived in the village on some cloth from London and people isolated themselves to keep it within the village and stop it spreading.

If you want free things to do then walking the peaks is fantastic. There are so many good walks to do, and the best way to see the Peak District. I live very close to Matlock Bath and am still finding new walks to go on in the Peak district. High Tor is a good walk from Matlock Bath and has breathtaking views and sheer cliff edges.
