5 or 10 Egyptian, GET REAL! I am thinking about 1 or 2 EGY£. The man who opens the door for you at your hotel expects a tip when you go through. If he gets EGY£1 from you every tine you go through (say 10 times a day) , he is doing OK, thank you very much! Baksheesh is a way of life but us Europeans get ripped off big time as we would normaly tip a £1 or a euro at a time which is not the Egyptian way. Little and often is more their way.Wayne_Laura wrote: »bcl999: Yeah that's a fair point - it'd feel a little rude to offer a 5 or 10 EGP tip if the smallest note you have is a 100...
As far as the booths, yes I think you may be right. I'm mixing up Visa booths with the exchange booth(s)? I've not been before so relying on forum posts. Are there multiple booths, ran by different banks/companies - and if so, is the XR they offer likely to vary dramatically - especially late evening on a Saturday?
No, you are not really mixing them up as they do the stamps for vissa as well as foreign exchange. It's just I've never felt ripped off with foreign exchange. I've haerd plenty of stories about the visa stamp scam though.
Have a great time there.0 -
Thanks very much, looking forward to it
Not only is it my first holiday in Egypt, it's my first time abroad. Damn shame that the main parts of the country are in a little turmoil at present, since visiting Luxor, the Valley of the Kings etc would have been a once in a lifetime thing. Hopefully they'll settle their problems and we can go back again in a couplo years
Thanks for the advice0 -
Your 1st time abroad and you've chosen Egypt? The present problems aside, it is a culture shock at any time. Think I would have broken myself in more gently...............still, it will be an experience and no mistake.0
