    Lots of people out of work Nick, that is bound to have a knock on effect. I just love it when talking to trademen when they say "I just come from a big job",and "next week I got a big job". My reply is usually "well if you can't fit me in", then watch 'em panic.
    The plain fact is there aint the work about and no one has money to spare on non essentials, the contractors who do give out jobs are asking for a better price or a favour.
    This is an MSE site.It is all about getting the price down.

    good tradesmen don't panic , they are always booked up and in demand , if someone doesn't like my prices then i don't loose any sleep over it

    That's down to you nickj but as ken has pointed out, this is a site about money saving, all that is required is a good job for a fair price, is is too much to ask the average tradesman to do a job to an adequate standard for a reasonable price?

    No one is trying to take the bread off your table.

    Well actually if it keeps the OP's kids fed then yes, they are;)
    I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

    Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    And what's the bet 1 of them is your own??

    Given that I'm in the south west about 3 hrs away from the OP, for what sounds like an hours work..... I think you need to learn some manners and less assumption.

    it is up to the customer to decide if the tradesman is good.

    So how are you, as the lay-person, going to know if a job has been done properly or not? If your house hasn't burnt down by the end of the week??

    Customer relations is part of being an electrician, can be learned same as your other skills.But being unclear and frightening folk into spending more money than necessary shouldn't be on the agenda.

    Absolutely! The problem exists though that there is difference of opinion as to what is 'necessary', and Mrs Jones can't be expected to know the answer to that, either.

    Hence - and to go back to the OP - the way to hire a good electrician is by recommendation. Forget the Safety Register lists, they are as much use as a chocolate fireguard as the NICEIC, ECA and Napit will let anyone in so long as they pay the money.

    And given that how can you say;

    "Oh - and to the OP - I know some very trustworthy electricians in your area, pm me if you want some numbers."

    You won't exactly have seen many examples of their work in that case

    Sorry names from a trade list is no guarantee, you can blow your trumpet all you like, self praise and all that.

    The OP doesn't want something for nothing, they want the joib doing, only fear of the rogues in all trades drives them to ask for blind recommendations on here.

    :D:D:D:D:D Just maybe it's 38 years in engineering and a last roll of chief mechanical and electrical engineer that gives me the edge;);)

    I've never been an electrician, but I've been directly responsible for a team of them, domestic? no, industrial.

    I bet you think we don't have labs, offices?
    Lay person?:rotfl::rotfl:

    The real problem is and I'll say it again, whilst ever your professional body admits and allows at least some sub standard or under trained individuals to practice, (and I use that in both senses of the word), the trade lack the confidence of Joe Public, the lay person.

    Why do some people continually refer to tut Tradesmen as if they are some kind of journeyman "tinker" who has to bend his knee in order for you to grant him a living? Just because you push a pen in an office or wear a suit to work,it doesnt make you better or less dispensable. Respect others as you would hope to be respected.
    Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
