I have been offered a business deal from virgin that will save me approx £75plus a month by moving to virgin(realize they use orange network) and wondered if there were any heavy phone users who could say how good reception was which is more important than the money especially around manchester and north west.

Step Daughter and her partner live in Manchester and are both heavy users. She travels a lot every day to Liverpool and Cheshire etc etc and very rare for her to have a problem.
To be safe though it would be best to try a PAYG sim in any area that you feel is critical for reception before you commit to a contractIt's not just about the money0 -
Hard to say if you don't tell us your current tariff and your new tariff.
And why the hell where you paying more than £85+ on a phone contract?0 -
the tariff makes no difference to phone reception which is what im concerned about .the reason for high phone contract is i have 2 phones with orange one a mobile and another which has a landline attached so 2 separate contracts plus i pay incoming call charges and divert cost etc to the mobile with the landline on it.If i transfer the landline to virgin then get a virgin sim (£15 unlimited everything) for my mobile i will pay no divert costs for landline to mobile would be free hence the huge savingHard to say if you don't tell us your current tariff and your new tariff.

Ah right, call forwarding makes sense.
Coverage on EE is fine in Manchester at the moment. Can't speak for smaller areas but the built up centre is covered fully.
But like others say, you're going to have to try it yourself in your immediate area to get an idea if it's useful for you.0 -
I've been using them for years. The coverage is spot on because it runs through Orange/T-Mobile/EE. I work all over the country and it's very rare I don't have a signal.
Have a look at some of their SIM only prices, there's some utter bargains.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?0 -

Go for it.
You say basic broadband though, would you be likely to ever exceed the download cap?
