What mcc-code for Transport For London?

Hello from Norway!

Going to London in July and we want to order visitor Oyster cards from TFL's website before we leave.

Now, I have a Norwegian CC with 4% caschback on "transport" (flights, buses, ferries, trains, etc) based on mcc-codes, among others the following:

4789 TRANSPORTATION SVCS - DEFAULT
4011 RAILROADS
4111 LOCAL COMMUTER TRANSPORT
4112 PASSENGER RAILWAYS

Does anyone know if purchases from TFL are classified under any of these codes?

You'll need to ask your credit card provider how they classify it.

I don't think they would know. I could contact TFL and ask them to contact their bank about this, but I hoped someone here would know.

I see TFL qualifies for cashback with the Santander 123 card but I don't know if Santander offer cashback for the same mcc codes as my card...

Visitor Oyster cards are not a good idea in the first place - they have a non-refundable £3 fee and have limited functionality.

A normal Oyster card will have a £5 refundable deposit and be more flexible than the visitor one. Buy it on arrival and still get the cashback

You might also want to consider the offers in:

If they are attractive to you then forget Oyster and buy a travelcard instead - from a rail station, not a tube one. A couple of attractions could mean the railcard is essentially free. And I assume it would still get you cashback

4% cashback! Is this a benefit of not being in the EU? :D

I have a credit card account which classifies my TFL charges as Transport costs. I don't know about all these subcategories but I think you should be good. Check with your CC provider if you want to be absolutely sure. Surely it can only be worth a few pounds in cash-back so if it was me I'd just enjoy my holiday and hope for the best!

If you are coming as a tourist and want to save real money, be sure to search online for 2for1 deals. Pretty much every tourist attraction here has some kind of deal going on which they will not publicise to tourists, which can slash the costs for smart people :-)

Hope you have a great time!

I'm pretty certain, Santander 123 will not give cashback on Norwegian transport; are you sure your card covers non-Norwegian transport for cahback?

Maybe you can buy the TFL ticket from some agency based in Norway!

Yes, as long as the vendor is registered with the correct mcc-code then it doesn't matter in what country the purchase takes place, or if it' online. I have a few other casback cards (petrol, clothes, groceries, etc) and the same goes for these.

Ok. I was under the impression that you'd have to be a UK resident to get a normal card. But I'll look into this.

If I can purchase them on arrival then I can use another of my CC's that has 4% cashback on all non-Norwegian spending in July....

No you don't need to be a resident - anyone can buy them. I think the only restriction is that they will only post them to a UK address.

But do look at the 2 for 1 as well

Why wouldn't it? It'll work in exactly the same way and give cashback for merchants classified with the MCC's they feel are transport related regardless of where they are. The MCC's are the same worldwide. Of course the 3% foreign exchange load wipes out the cashback earned...
