Flight Compensation - must return with same airline

We got caught up in the ash cloud and this year (after the Ryanair ruling) I contacted Easyjet about our return flight cancellation during the ash cloud and our additional expenditure for extra nights accommodation. They said I could not claim compensation because we flew back with a different airline. This was only because the Easyjet flights were booked for over another week. Is this right?

did you get the flight refunded by Easyjet....If you had incurred expenses whilst waiting for a flight they had arranged for you, you would have been covered. As you chose to arrange another flight with another airline yourself they do not need to reimburse you for waiting for that flight but they do need to refund your ticket you did not use.
Did you try your travel insurance?0
