Will a good hotel give us an upgrade if they know it's my husband's 40th

We are staying in Liverpool at a top boutique hotel on a Saturday in the next couple of weeks. I have booked a luxury room but I know they have lots of suites also which at the moment are not booked, but the problem is they are £250 - £350 and that is without breakfast or parking!! The room I have booked is through Late Rooms and is £150.
If they know it's my husband's 40th will they automatically give us an upgrade to a better room if they have one. We stayed in London at Easter and they did this for us for our anniversary.
Should I e-mail the hotel guest relations manager to explain it is my husband's 40th or wait until check in?
My friend reckons I should scan a copy of his birth certificate to the guest relations manager as she imagines lots of people try this.

There's no harm in trying - they can only say no (but hopefully yes) It might depend on whether Liverpool beat Milan tonight:beer:
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!0 -
There is no harm in emailing the hotel to let them know, I wouldn't send them a copy of his birth certificate unless the ask for it.
Requests like this are subject to availability and also how generous the reservations mgr/revenue mgr or guest relations mgr is feeling!
I would email them and see what happens, when you email them say that you realise that requests of this nature are subject to availability and you would appreciate anything they can do to help make your husband's birthday extra special. If they can't upgrade you then you may get a bottle of wine or champagne in your room:j Debt free since 31/01/08:j

What’s the difference in asking for ‘spare change’ to asking for ‘spare upgrades’? In my books, it’s begging either way.
Oh get over yourself, getting a free upgrade will always feel better than paying for it.0 -
I got one for my 40th at a London Hotel. No harm in trying.0

If you don't ask or try you don't get0 -
I just got a Double upgrade at a boutique hotel in didsbury, and I didnt ask for it, the room I had booked via laterooms wasnt ready on check in, so had a beer in the garden, Receptionist kept popping out to say "room will be ready in 10mins, 3 beers and no complaints later, she led us to the best room in the hotel
should have been £280 a night and I got for £76.
Being nice and polite to the staff and IMO not automatically expecting an upgrade helps. Next on my list is to get an upgrade so I can turn left on the plane.;)0 -
An easy way is to ring the hotel and ask for a bottle of champagne to be in your room for when you arrive as it's your husbands 40th. If you are friendly on the phone most people would make a note of it & if possible give you an upgrade.
