Lost driving licence and insurance need it within 14 days

Hi all,

Thanks for taking the time to read my thread.

I have purchased a new vehicle. My insurer (Tesco) has asked for various documents within 14 days or they will cancel the policy.

I have everything they are asking for except perhaps one of the most important - my drivers licence.

I have also moved address which needs updating.

What is the quickest way to get a new drivers licence with updated details before my insurer cancels my policy?

Thank you.

Explain the situation to Tesco (send them everything else they want now). Ask them (in writing) to extend their deadline over the missing licence. Don't wait till the deadline has arrived in case your replacement icence hasn't turned up.

You need to ensure they don't carry out their threat to cancel the policy which will have major consequences for you in the future.

I applied for a replacement driving licence on line, paid my £20 and it turned up within the week.

I've never been asked for a copy of my driving license before from an insurer, particularly when I've transferred a new vehicle onto an existing policy. Is there something we're missing here OP?

    It's not unusual.

Increasing numbers of insurers do routinely request all drivers to be insured send in copies.

I renewed my licence few weeks back at the post office on tues afternoon and it dropped through my door Saturday morning x you have to go to one of the bigger ones tho that have the photo booth.
  • Thanks all for your posts. It currently also says I need to send off my passport for identification, which will leave me without any photo ID. Not ideal as I am setting up a new business and need the ID for opening a current account. If I go to the Post Office can I avoid sending off my passport?

    Thanks

I renewed my photocard licence recently and one of the options is to get it done at the Post Office for an extra fee.

However, I'm pretty sure that you can't replace a lost licence at the Post Office. You have to do it online or fill in all the forms (available at the PO) and send them off.

If you get your arse into gear, you could open the bank account and then send off for your licence. It took about a week to get mine back.

Your actual passport, or a photocopy? I've never heard of any insurer wanting a passport posted to them, have they stated why? Do you have a British passport or are they asking because you are a foreign national? Otherwise I can't see any reason at all why an insurance company would need to see a passport as well as a driving licence.

    What insurance company is it?

That makes more sense, oops :o.

As suggested above, open the current account today or Monday and then send passport off (Special Delivery). And explain to Tesco in case there is a delay in getting the licence sent out to you.
