Just don't complain about Amazon, Google or Starbucks in future.

Why? Its not like the garage won't be paying the VAT amount to the tax man, its just they will be taking it out of their profit instead.

Tax evasion due to a legal loophole?
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Its not that at all, is it?

The garage agreed a price with the customer which following the completion of the contract realised they should have charged more.. As the garage were dealing with a consumer they should be talking inc vat pricing, therefore it is their own mistake.

They'll just adjust their records internally and calculate VAT backwards. So £236.67 + £47.33 VAT = £284.

They will still be making a profit I suspect

The garage still have to pay the VAT.

Big corporations still have to pay the VAT, so Amazon etc do pay VAT on sales in the UK. You are getting mixed up with corporation tax which they have a legal loophole round, costs the UK billions every year, but the government don't care, they sit on most of their boards as advisor's so don't expect a change in the law anytime soon.

OP - Whilst the matter appears to have been resolved following the post from wealdroam, can you see if the receipt you have shows a VAT number.

It is a legal requirement when charging VAT to show a VAT number, so if anything else, no VAT number shown on receipt = no VAT to pay.

If you believe the garage has made a genuine error and the bill had been charged without VAT then you'd have a moral obligation to pay the VAT, fairs fair, but if you believe the garage are trying to add on extra costs then that's their problem.

I find it odd a garage would forget to charge VAT, considering everything they sell would be plus VAT.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

Even if the garage forgot to add VAT, when writing the receipt surely these words would have prompted them to remember.

    Sub Total: (left empty)
    VAT at 20%: (left empty)
    TOTAL DUE: £284.00.

If the garage can't be bothered to fill out their own receipt correctly than thats hardly the customers fault if they are told the total is £284 than thats all they should pay.
