unlocking phone with provider

I currently have a contract with orange which is due to expire at the end of this month. I have already given my 30 days notice to cancel this contract.

I have just ordered a brand new phone and contract through a reputable website and the contract again is with orange. This is due to start soon. When I receive the phone I think.

I currently use an orange San Diego and plan to continue using this phone, therefore selling the new phone I've ordered.

What I would like to know is, as the new phone will be locked to orange, if I ring orange and tell them I want to unlock the new phone, ( the phone I plan to sell) is this possible and how long does it usually take?

I want to get the new phone unlocked so it makes it more valuable.

Orange can be extremely difficult when it comes to unlocking, their new rules are 6 months on the network and a charge of £20.xx. The unlock will take up to 30 days to be processed.

Depending on the phone you get, it would be easier to arrange the unlock elsewhere if the phone can be unlocked other than by the network.

Yes UP to 30 days, I have had phones unlocked twice through orange and its taken about a week, been totally stress free as well. No complaints or problems here

You can unlock some phones yourself and many others can be unlocked for a fiver on ebay.

The first question is will it be locked. Many of the bigger 3rd party companies (such as Carphone) will have generic unlocked stock rather than Orange stock. Unless the phone is an Orange exclusive, there a good chance it will come unlocked. That way CPW only have to hold one "pile" of any phone, not have to keep Vodafone/O2/Orange/TM/3 versions, and check the right one goes to the right contract.

Its possible you may get a locked phone if the network did a special deal on handsets, but best check it before you spend any money.
