Thomson Hand Baggage allowance

This sums up the problem. Unlike the majority of people in this forum who are experienced travellers, new visitors to the forum are frequently inexperienced travellers, hence their need to ask for advice. While it may appear commonplace to experienced travellers to check the T&Cs and baggage policy, an inexperienced traveller would make a reasonable assumption that the baggage policy would allow a reasonable size and weight. In Thomson's case, 5kg is unreasonably low.
Some might consider that you made a mistake here; others (like me) would say that the airline is at fault for imposing an unreasonably low weight allowance. If the airline handled the item, then there might be justification for a low weight allowance, but given that only the passenger handles the item, there is no justification for such a low weight allowance, only a reasonable size limit to ensure sufficient space in the overhead lockers.
Sorry, but I just can't agree with you here. I would if it were hidden in the T&C or if you didn't have to tick to agree that you had read it just beforehand, to be able to move forward with the booking. The first time I booked with Thomson, it made me go back to make me read the baggage section as I hadn't ticked the box.
It's is hardly hidden between thousands of words and is separated from the rest of the text.
I'm all for consumer protection, but people, unless disabled in some way, need to take some responsibility for their own behaviour.
The OP has admitted that she didn't bother. So this can happen.
Many of my posts go against the grain, as I insist on people getting the correct and best info. So if I thought that the OP was in the right, I too would fight her cause. She isn't.
So instead of ignoring my post, she should get online and purchase an allowance or take her chances.
Their airport charges are ridiculously high to avoid people trying it on. Often double the online charge. So expect to pay £88 for the return journey for up to 20kgs.
I'm just being realistic. Nothing against the OP at all.0 -
I've flown with Thomsons 3 times and never had my hand luggage weighed.0

Exactly my point. Some have and some haven't. No way to reassure the OP.
They have to decide for themselves whether they want to take the chance.0 -
If you have a cabin sized bag they tend to weight it, if it's just a rucksack they don't. 5kg is standard for a charter airline.0

We've had our hand luggage weighed once in the last 10 or so flights with them.
Both bags were overweight by 2 or 3kg, the checking girl simply told us to make sure we took one thing out if we could, whilst smiling.
If I was worried by it, I'd just leave them in the car until after I'd checked in.0 -
mistakes are what make us stronger. The £44 purplestar133 spends on hold luggage is insignificant compared to the valuable knowledge gleened from that one error.
it is always worth spending an extra 5 minutes checking the FAQ regarding baggage, name, date changes, cancellation charges, check in times etc etc. Each airline have their own policies, charges.
Unlike NFH who would like everything uniform as in a Castro controlled Communist like state, I think its actually a good thing.
It is then worth rechecking all the info you have put in. Auto complete is responsible for a lot of costly errors too.
NiftyDigits is of course correct, although his tone is more the school teacher who used to give us 6 of the belt for not singing in tune in class.
He was a good teacher though.0
