I don't want to rehome my dogs

  • My Ds suddenly became allergic to all annimals after visiting his uncle who had a house full of annimals, cats, dogs, chinchillas, birds. He also went in uncles van full of dog hair. He came back after one day with symtoms of a really bad cold (I thought) but the next day he was fine. Now he is allergic to all annimals except hamsters. It seems to me , that although he had previously been in houses where there were pets it was the sudden massive exposure that did it. I don't know if you have been in this sort of situation. Just a thought.

Caught the end of this on Radio 4 this afternoon - might be useful? Also a colleague was telling me she has pernicious anaemia because she can't absorb Vit B12, and now that's being treated her asthma is improving no end!

    Hi MM

What sort of farm do you live on? Both myself and my sone have hayfever and it has been truly apalling this year, starting in about february!

If your dogs dont moult then I would not think that they are the culprit, its usually the dander in the coat that sets off allergies rather than the hair itself.

You can get tests from the York labs which you can do yourself which will tell you if you are allergic to different types of food, but I would iinsist on a full set of blood tests to find out what is causing this.

Please dont take this the wrong way but have you tried hoovering the bed and the sofa with a really powerful hoover? It may be you have a dust mite allergy which build up around the home very quickly. Hoovering the mattress and putting sheets in the freezer overnight after you have washed them at over 60 degrees will eradicate the majority of them, and you would notice a big difference if that is what it is.

Apart from that, have they been spraying the fields around you with much this year? It may be that is the culprit? Also check the brands you have been using, I found that the same brands frequently changed ingredients without telling you, and then you had to start all over again with the allergies!

Hope you get it sorted out soon whatever it is!

    Hi All

    Just a quick update

Went back to the doctors this mornign and saw different dr, this time a right pompous git who completely trivialised my suffering

Its now got to the point that I cannot hear and both my eardrums are being affected with the pressure - I have to talk and hear for a living, I spend all day talking to clients so you can imagine what that is doing to me

The doctor again refused to give me allergy tests and said it was pointless. Prescribed antibiotics, and a different nasal spray and told me to be on my way.

I stood my ground this time and asked for the fourth time what it was. He said "it sounds" like chronic sinusitis and perhaps allergic rhinitis. I told him I didnt want to know what it sounded like, I wanted to know what it was, what caused it, what I can do to prevent it/ease the symptoms and got back on to the allergy test again. The Dr was so nasty. He suggest I came back in three weeks time if the antibiotics and nasal spray didnt work. All I wanted was a bloody allergy test!

Anyway, I decided to do my own bit of investigation into this mystery sounds like condition and it turns out that it can be trigger by pets. pollen, dust, housemites, well just about anything, even dairy products.

Does anyone else get this chronic sinusitis? I will be so relieved if these antibiotics work because at the moment I am knackered, upset, frustrated and I feel like my head is in a tightening vice. L

Could you have nasal polyps? For the past two years I have either had a runny or a blocked nose, I always felt it too trivial to mention at the Doctors and if I ever mentioned it whilst there for something else (usually Sinusitus or Asthma) all I was told was 'steam inhalation may help' I was given a steroid nasal spray, took antihistamines all year round, took steroid inhalers and singulair tablets. I didn't see any improvement using the spray so stopped taking it but continued with all the other meds. A few months ago I'd had enough and luckily saw a symapathetic Doctor, she referred me to the ENT clinic at the hospital and the Doctor took 0.0002 seconds to declare that I had nasal polyps in both nostrils. This was affecting my sense of smell (I cannot smell anything whatsoever), eating and drinking - try eating or drinking when you can't breathe through your nose, sleeping - again difficult to sleep with your mouth open the whole night, talking , the pressure in my ears is constant, I'm always having to blast my nose like a scuba diver - the list is endless.

I'll be having them removed and look forward to being able to breathe and smell again! Incidentally when I was hospitalised due to asthma around a year ago, the Doctor who saw me asked if I had any pets. When I said I had a cat he exclaimed 'Ah, that's it then - you'll need to get rid of it'. My reply was 'Er, I don't think so - I've had her for 18 years and have never suffered before now'. He went a bit red and scuttled off

    right OP!!!

Make yourself one completely allergen-free room and I suggest your bedroom. Get the carpet out and get someone to do a really good hoover with a special powerful vaccuum cleaner top, bottom, behind things, everywhere. Damp wipe everything. Get new hypo-allergen pillows. You get the picture? You`ll know when the room is right because it will feel fresh

Get an air cleaner in there and have it on during the day and also keep the windows tight shut while the pollen season is active. Don`t get an ioniser unless it is one that DOES NOT produce ozone as ozone can also be a trigger

You`ll have to search the net but I got a couple at about £30 a few years ago

also cut out wheat and all dairy until your symptoms have gone away, then reintroduce one at a time.

Get allergen-blocking covers on the mattress and pillows

    You can do it!!!
I also have a very powerful oreck filter, which I only use after dusty work

Oh MM I really feel for you! I had late onset lactose intolerance, and it took me ages to work it out. I was bloated, runny nose, no sense of smell, painful itchy rashes up and down my arm. I switched over to soya milk for a couple of months and now drink lacto free and only goats cheese. It really did help, and helped with the other allergies as well, unfortunately once you get one thing it can trigger off more.

I also got late onset asthma as well some years ago, so it may be all related!

I would agree with kittie, eliminate the obvious things, dairy, wheat, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol (I know!) for a couple of weeks, and let your body have a rest. Then start by reintroducing them a little bit at a time and see how you feel.

The other one that comes from left field is how are your teeth? I have a fantastic holistic dentist that explained to me at the age of 37 I needed a brace on my teeth which would help my neck, and she was right! ENT depts in Australia and Germany now realise that the teeth and jaw directly impacts the whole ENT system, because if it is out, it places huge stress on the whole thing and can cause problems alter on. The UK is lagging behind a little but more and more dentists are recognising how important correct jaw alignment is.

Hope you feel better soon :A

Thanks for listening to my rant girls I really appreciate it. I've got to interview a client now but my husband went to asda and came back with something called apple cider vinegar. He put 1/2 into a cup and then topped it up with cranberry juice and unbelievably my nose was almost clear within an hour. My right ear has now popped so I can hear in that one but I'm still chesty. I've been and bought soya milk and dairy free margarine this morning and I only have two cups of proper tea a day, for the other drinks I switched to green tea with jasmine and honey chamomile and vanilla tea about 3 weeks ago.

Whats goats cheese and goats milk like I imagine disgusting? (I;m not good at trying new things). Anyway one beneficial thing is all this no sense of taste and cutting things out is helping me lose weight!

    Hi MM,

So sorry you are still suffering. The sinisitis with all the symptoms you describe are exactly what I had for about three months. Nothing helped except that I fell pregnant, and although it meant everything else got better, I was still bunged up until seven months in. When I was diagnosed with the asthma last year, my doctor worked out that I probably had the asthma then but the sinisitis masked it (up coughing all night like you did), but that the steroids produced by the pregnancy was enough to keep it all at bay. And steroids help allergies/inflamation. I almost guarantee the antibiotics won't work, so when you go back press again for those allergy tests!

    Poor you MM!

If you don't get anywhere with your problem, I'd suggest you ring your practice and talk to the receptionist, explaining that you saw Dr X last time and he was dismissive of what is becoming a debilitating problem for you and you were left feeling upset and trivialised, and could they perhaps suggest another doctor for you to see? If you play for the sympathy vote sometimes receptionists have inside info on which doctors are nicest to patients and will really listen to your problems.
