in Water bills
Hi
I am looking for some advice I brought an ex-council flat inMarch of this year which has a water meter fitted. Today I have received my bill which is a lothigher then I expected. I called SevernTrent to discuss the bill and they said there was defiantly a problem has theyread the meter on the 15th and I updated the reading today and therewas a significant difference.
They have now said they believe that there is an internalleak but I have not heard or noticed any water and there are council tenantsunderneath my flat and they have not noticed any leaks.
I pay my building insurance though the council but they havesaid they are not interested and that it is my problem. Severn Trent has alsosaid that they cannot investigate but to get the problem sorted.
I wondered if anyone had been in a similar situation.
Thanks

Do a flow test. Turn off all taps etc, read the meter, re-read an hour or so later and see if it's moved.
The usual culprit is a faulty WC, where the diaphragm valve leaks, and water trickles constantly through the pan. Go check.
Or it could be a supply pipe leak after the meter. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I turned off the water and reading stayed the same when it was turned back on the meter reading jumped up quickly0

What did you turn off? - the main stopc0ck?
You need to leave on the stopc0ck and ensure all taps etc in the house are off. The last of the 3 red digits on the meter measures a litre - so if the meter moves you know there is a leak.
As said above the cistern is the commonest cause of leaks. Either leaking silently into the bowl. Or if the level in the cistern is too high the overflow can(in flats) carry water to the main drain. That also applies to any header tank in the flat.0 -
I have checked the toilet and found no problems. From 7pm tonight when I have checked the meter is moving up every second but I have not ran any water. I have recorded this on my phone.
Severn trent should be sending out someone to investigate and say they will be in touch in the next five days.0 -
Also I just wanted to thank everyone for their replies I'm hoping it may just be a faulty meter and that they will find the problem. I've just been worried has there is only me in the flat and i have a disability and they want to up my dd to £64 per month which is quite abit from my wage.0

Just a thought.
It is not unknown in blocks of flats that there is a feed(after the meter) from your flat to another flat.0 -
yep as you live in flats check its your meter, turn it off at the stoptap b4 the meter if internal or at the bou ndary box if its external and see if you still have water running0
