after a squirrel came down and ran about breaking things, the landlord got proper cows put on the chimney...
Not much grazing on top of a chimney, and hard to balance too. Were they anorexic circus cows by any chance?0 -
Years ago my parents blocked the chimney off and we had an electric fire instead and we had quite a few instances of birds falling down the chimney.
Luckily dad had put a plastic vent in the chimney breast which was easily removed with a screw driver to let the bird free.
I learnt very quickly that a freed bird will fly straight towards light as the first bird left with a bit of a bent beak after banging straight into the window :eek:0 -

Please call RSPCA NOW
can you please think of the bird's plight for a minute ? If its stuck there, its perhaps in pain and hunger.
Call RSPCA please. There is more to life than increasing its speed.0 -

it doesn;'t sound at all practical / possible to rescue the bird... see previous posts & OPWe seem to have a Pigeon or some bird stuck in the chimney of our rental. It's got a fitted electric fire so no access up the chimney. Who's responsible to get this removed myself or the Landlord?Quite. OP said
so to those accusing respondants as uncaring, just how would RSPCA or fire brigade get it out? Options perhaps:
* rip out fire, open up fireplace, get sweep round and push up
* lower a loop of rope/wire down fro above, hook round pigeon's head, and pull up
I don't think so!
the pigeon is a gonner. :A0 -

To be serious for a minute, it's a pigeon, not a dog or a cat or a horse.
While it's true that we should respect all living things, attempting to divert the RSPCA from work they do just isn't sensible.
But assuming they came and removed the fire fascia, certainly causing damage, who would pay for that? The OP has the option of doing this and has, presumably, discounted it. To be honest, if going down this route a competent builder would probably be the best person to do it.0 -

Just to clarify this query; as the electric fire is just going to be disconnected and then reconnected and no new electrical "work" is to be carried out, Part P would not apply.
However, the individual would need to be competent in safe and efficient electrical isolation of the circuit concerned.
Hope that helps for reference"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

What happened to the pigeon?
When I was in a rented shared accommodation a few years ago I had a pigeon stuck in my chimney. I was fortunate the chimney was only covered by a wooden board screwed on so i could unscrew and open the chimney. With the help of my dear friend who picked up the petrified bird and put it in a box which we took outside to the garden where we managed to set it free.
I cant tell you how glad I was we managed to set it free. No help from landlord as i can remember, it was about 10 years ago.

Had the same experience as the OP a few years back.
The RSPCA refused to come out, presumably because they knew it was impossible for them to help in any practical way.0
