Quite frequently when clicking on a 'contact us' button on a retailer's website, looking for information or querying an order or similar which should open up their message page, I get what appears to be a Russian website.

To get round this I have to manually type in the company's email address and send an ordinary email that way.

Has anybody else had this happen, why does it happen and should I be concerned about nasties on my computer?

I'd check your PC for nasties, it shouldn't happen.

What AV program are you running? Have you run a full manual scan?
I'd also do a scan with MalwareBytes.

I've run Comodo AV and Malwarebytes - nothing found.

When I get to the Russian site it says mail (dot) yandex (dot) ru

I haven't noticed anything else untoward apart from my Thunderbird email crashing now and again (probably about once a week).

Is the 'log' all the lines that come up on a Notepad after telling Hijackthis to run? Sorry - not very techy I'm afraid. Can I post the results here?

As regards Thunderbird - yes, it's set as default email.

Looks like a nasty unwanted toolbar infection. It may be awkward to get rid of.

I presume, you already tried "System Restore" ? Always the easiest way to rollback to previous system configuration settings.

If that does not help. There are a few "uninstall" methods suggestions posted on the internet such as this, you could try.....
    http://www.pcrisk.com/removal-guides/6990-remove-yandex-toolbar

Then scan your PC with something like this:

You need to Edit your mailto: preference setting in Opera & change it from Yandex to your default mail handler (Thunderbird). (Open Opera > Ctrl + F12)

Click the thumbnails below to see:

    th_opera1_zpsa7cff18a.png
    th_opera2_zps16729f64.png

Then make sure Thunderbird is your default mail client.
