PD? SE? What do all these acronyms mean? What on earth is this thread about? !!!!!! Cheney?"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

I watched a programme a while back about health treatment in the US and seeing the queues of hundreds of people queuing up in the streets going around the block to get dental & health treatment from drs who give their free time on rare occasions to help them out, was enough to put you off. It was like looking at an African refugee camp or something. Let alone the insurance costs they pay each month only to find out not everything is even covered on it..0

Why do people keep commenting like they know what this thread's about?? What am I missing? Are they all in on some secret?

when you are referred by PD for a therapy, ie. occupational therapy?
This happened to me twice. I was referred by my son's PD to occupational therapy but was told that there was no budget.
The impact on me is that I am reluctant to help others as well.
I normally would donate to any fundraiser who comes to me from children charity but after that I said no for several times.
This started in a cold winter day before last Christmas and just a few days after my baby got the 'a' label. I was stopped by a fundraiser for children who were said to be homeless during Christmas time and donated 3 pounds from my pay as you go mobile fee. From then on I kept getting phones from fundraising company. They told me that 'homeless' does not mean to sleep roughly on the streets but means that a child does not have a permanent home then has to live in a motel. And according to them these children are twice likely to develop mental illness. If I could donate 15 pound a month I can help to give the children a permanent home. I suddenly felt sick of this to be honest. The welfare for children in this country is far better than anywhere else in the world. Why should I use the money which I could use on private therapies for my own baby to help other children who obviously are their own parents' responsibility?
Ever since then I have been keeping saying a direct no to all the fundraisers coming to my door.
Without knowing what SE and PD are, it is difficult to understand parts of the OP's post. I must admit that I assumed SE meant Special Education when I read the title. I thought that PD was something to do with autism - the daughter of one of my friends has a condition with similar initials, but when I have checked, it is PDD (pervasive Developmental disorder).
Also, the PD in the opening line seems to be a person or department if they have referred the child for a therapy. Could it be Paediatric Doctor? I don't know, and guessing isn't really helping anyone.
I'm also not sure what the 'a' label is. My first thought w autism, but the OP refers to her child as a baby, and autism isn't diagnosed in babies.
Regarding charity donations, I support a few charities as best. I am able, but they are charities that I have chosen to support for personal reasons.
And as for the NHS, ok, it has it's problems, but without it, my son would have died as a baby. Instead, he has access to medical care and monitoring, and lives a decent life. Yes, I would prefer more speech therapy for him, and there have been times when I have been frustrated at the seeming lack of communication between departments, but at the end of the day, it is there for most of us. It may not be perfect, and never will be, but at least we get health care provided based on need, not ability to pay. And yes, I know that sometimes people need treatment that isn't available, but for the vast majority most treatment, therapies, and many drugs are provided.
Sorry for the rambling post. I'm not feeling very organised this morning!0 -

Thank you. Why does PD mean paediatrician? Not seen that abbreviation used before."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
OK. I get it now. Because the OP has been shunned by those she needs to help her with her son's condition (some sort of unspecified learning difficulty), she feels reluctant to help others.
It happens, doesn't it? That's why it's important to be kind and charitable - because kindness and charity beget kindness and charity and we all benefit as a result. When the opposite happens, people get selfish and self-oriented (understandably so)."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -
I support local charities, especially ones who supported me when my boys were small. For example, the little local special needs nursery who not only helped my boys but also kept me sane.We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

I am very sorry to hear of the problems you are facing in getting your son the therapy he needs. It must be incredibly frustrating to be told there is no budget for such important input into his development. My heart goes out to you because as a parent you are just trying to do your best by your child and coming up against brick walls.
Occupational, play and speach and language therapists have such vital roles and are stretched to the maximum nowadays with their workloads. Much greater investment needs to be channelled to these services so as they are readily available to all.
It is not always easy to feel like being generous to others, when you are struggling and going through a hard time yourself. Personally I do give to some charities of my choice each month. I contacted them myself rather than have anyone approach me and payments are set up by direct debit. Some of the organisations I support have made a huge difference to friends and loved ones of mine in the past and I do it to show my thanks for that. I also hope that in some small way by giving a little, research can be carried out that may one day prevent someone else from suffering. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0
