If you are a higher-rate taxpayer, you probably won't get child benefit. From January this year, higher-rate taxpayers don't get it. So don't count on it.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

It's not all higher rate taxpayers, it's those earning over £50k, which OP doesn't. The thresholds for higher rate tax and the High Income Child Benefit tax charge don't match exactly... They were originally planned to but the plans were revised.

And even if you earn over £50k, you don't lose all of it until you get to £60k, the withdrawal is 1% for every £100 over £50k.

    it was the
' wow, i didnt realise babies would be that cheap to keep'
    comment that bothered me.
the OP is earning a good wage, but obviously feels he should be getting more.
so i dont think he was just finding out ... more suprised that he wouldnt get any additiona help apart from child benefit

    nannytone,

I have never claimed ANYTHING thank you very much but I have paid in a hell of a lot of money. I didn't have any expectations but as others pointed out, I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on anything.

In fact, I now know I will get £20 a week which will help us out. Sorry if this upset you.

Thanks everyone else for your comments.

the OP is earning in excess of 40k, his partner will receive 7k in maternity allowance and over 1k in child benefit .
people fo on about the 'culture of entitlement'. the fact that someone with the income level of the OP fwwla they should be entitlled to more than child benefit is eqyally oddensive.

Conversely, if the or has been a HR payer, should he not be entitled to MORE. Paid in more get more out.

I feel less disgusted about the op receiving generous assistance during this transition to parenthood, than some layabout never paid a penny into the system receiving HB, CTB, ESE, WTC, IS etc

I find it shocking that people who work hard, get on and pay their taxes seem to be vilified for their hard work.

What people need to remember when they shoot them down, they pay their rent!

I don't think anyone isn't disgusted by 'layabouts' who have never paid into the system lots of benefits, but the vast majority of people who receive benefits are NOT layabouts and have paid into the system at some time and of those able to work that are not working, the vast majority would love to work if the jobs were there. For those on low incomes, blame the companies that get away with paying a 'below cost of living' wage so they can increase their profits for shareholders knowing the tax payer will top up the wages with WTC. For those in receipt of HB, blame the buy to let landlords that charge market rates that the taxpayer pays because their tenants can either not get a job, or can only get a low paid job that they cannot afford to live on!

By ESE I'm guessing you mean ESA? Which is an out of work benefit for people too sick to work. Some of who may never pay in, or never have. However, the majority of them have worked while they were able.

What a helpful contribution to this thread!

No, it is not ALWAYs someone else's fault, but your insinuation that any who claims any benefit is far from the truth. The majority of the benefits bill goes to pensioners, some of whom will have done more for this country than most. There are plenty of people on benefits who work hard on minimal wages, on incomes that are too low to live on due to the high cost of living/housing.

Tax payments are not like paying into a savings account. They are a payment towards services required by all of society, payable according to your means. Those who earn more pay more. Those who earn at the bottom of the pay level get help. Those who are unable to work, often through no fault of their own also get help. The OP is a high enough earner that it is considered that he doesn't need extra help.
