Mine works in any office application.
Make sure the menu is fully expanded first!!! (keep mouse on menu for one second or click on the 2 small down srrows.
Going into Font or Insert -> Symbol is still the same amount of clicks! :-) When you have one, you can copy and paste untiul your ciik of them!
No need to go into Control Panel, in m opinion.

If you want a tick as a result of the value of another cell, or if you just want the user to enter y or n rather than poking around for the right character, try somehthing like:
=if(a1="y",char(252),char(251))
And set the font for the cell to wingdings.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0
