House not ready on move-in date

Hi
I'm in the process of moving into a new build house. I have an agreed move in date on a signed contract by the builder. I've found out now that it won't be ready in time.
I've arranged to move out of my rented house a couple of days after the new house is finished and booked time off work to move in. Friends and family were all ready to help us move in and now they've told us it won't be ready on time. We're supposed to be moving in next week. It has caused a lot of distress to say the least.
Any advice on this?

i dont think in my lifetime i have seen a building be completed on a move in date they give many months / year ahead of schedule
i would never have given my notice in - would have waited until i saw the building complete and the start of finishing touches and even then wait a while to ensure all inside work is complete and only cosmetic touches are left
i assume your rental was a 1 month notice - so an overlap would have been managable depending on when your mortgage payment is due (always possible to discuss with the bank)
good luck - your best recourse is your land lord - suggest to him if he can extend your rental and disregard your notice
he will not be happy as he wants the peace of mind and would rather have someone who would sign for a year or 6 month contract.... but good luck0 -
Why do they give completion dates then?
The builder (quite a large, well known company) is quite embarrassed at the fact that this has run-over and our solicitor is negotiating compensation. To suggest it happens all the time surprises me.

Most New Build contracts have open Completion dates - usually with some 'end date' ie not later than....
This allows for delays in the construction eg caused by weather etc.
However, if you have a fixed Completion date (as is usual with property sales other than New Builds), then your contract will specify the penalties for non-Completion. You should be able to claim a daily % of the purchase price plus your costs.
Move into a hotel, keep the bills, and claim.0
