Shhhh, dont tell everyone or they will all be doing it, but i've found out the best way of avoiding all of these unauthorised overdraft charges.
Don't go overdrawn, works for me everytime.0 -
Masonic, I trust you are going to claim your 2p back.0

I was never charged for overdraft, to be absolutely frank, i used O/D only once in my 12 months interest free period. Yes, I had bad ( in fact terrible) experiences with A&L, I think A&L is still not up to standards with the big four, but their charges are certainly meaningless like that of big four..
Lastly, I canceled my account with them last week, I am glad I did it, coz , I visited the branch for account cancellation (Dudley branch), I was told I cannot cancel it in the branch, I have to call the customer center. I had 450 pounds in the account, i did mention to casher, I want to close the account, but she still managed to give me 50 pounds out of my overdraft (oops a calculation error was the answer I was given). 1 hour later when I called the customer center to cancel the account, the operator asked me how I want to withdraw my money in the account ? ( I had already withdrawn the money in the branch) This shows their transaction records are not the most reliable. ones.0 -

Tee hee that reminds me. When OH closed his account with Lloyds over the counter, it had 2p in it. He had to fight to get it paid out as they had proceeded to put it into a charity box, then they asked him whether he wanted a cheque or cash, LOL.Reclaimed thanks to this site:
£175 Abbey Mortgage Repayment Fee, £170.03 Capital One Bank Charges £418.07 Lloyds TSB Bank Charges, £2,671.55 Mis-sold Endowment Policy, all for OH0 -
I have found A+L to be the worst bank in the country, and are totally unwilling to help with anything.
Picture this for a good one, I had just been made unemployed, I phoned them up to cancel 2 direct debits, no problem the advisor said, Anyway the direct debits attempt to go out 5 days later, but because I have no money they bounce, theres £50 and a further £25 for going over drawn, In goes my first weeks benefit, totally swallowed up by charges.
I phone them and give off about why I was told the direct debits where cancelled and they weren't, this advisor thought I was lying, there apparantly was no record of me even phoning. I had wrote cheques they bounced and they bounced again until I eventually got a default for £500, and it wasn't my fault,
Horrible horrible people!!!!! We had to eat at my parents house for 3 wks I kid you not as we had no money for anything.
I must say I am now getting tremdus fun sueing them, and hopefully they judge asks how I got into this mess as I will enjoy telling him.her how heartless they are0 -
only because we will get a slightly reduced interest rate on their fixed rate mortgage (their mortgage was the cheapest for us) ...we will probably just put the mortgage payments in and not use it for anything else.Respond to every call that excites your spirit.0

I wouldn't worry ... It's all down to personal experience - I have just opened an A&L account and have only good things to say about them.
On the other hand I could berate Natwest but other members may not have had any problems with them and not agree...:happylove Tori Bellatrix :happylove

I have had a Premier Direct current account with A&L (the one recommended by Martin) for nine months. It came with a £1,000 overdraft with NO monthly charges and 0% interest for a year. Cheques I have paid in have cleared quickly and cash I paid in at the Post Office has been credited to my account immediately. So far I am delighted with the account. I manage the account, and make payments, online and have received great customer service when I lost not one but two debit cards in quick succession.
I note other people's comments with interest but have to say, to date at least, the service I am receiving is a massive improvement on my previous bank account with RBS, for which I was paying £6.00 per month.0 -
I've been with A&L for almost a year now and have never had any problems with them."I did then, what I knew then. And when I knew better, I did better"0
