DHCP only assigns an IP address to my laptop some of the time.

Hi,
I am trying to work out why DHCP only assigns my laptop an IP address some of the time.
I have searched for answers but I get stuck because the ipconfig/all thing doesnt work on the laptop, it just briefly flashes up a black box then quickly disappears before I can see what it says? I am typing ipconfig/all in the run box, am I doing something wrong?
I did wonder if it was something to do with the Belkin router we had but that blew up yesterday and I have had to resort to a rubbish one called edimax or something that our ISP sent us, the problem is still the same though so I guess it is the settings on the laptop somewhere.
I hope someone can help me out as its driving me crazy!

Start > run > cmd
in the command prompt then do
ipconfig /all
The reason its falshing up is ipconfig is a dos application which displays the information. Once the application finishes, it terminates. If you've run ipconfig from the run prompt, then it will run and close very quickly. If you do it in command prompt you see the result when the application is terminated
You could always not use dhcp
Write down the details of ipconfig /all
then go to your network connections, right click on the network adapter and click properties. Select TCP/IP and properties again, then instead of using "obtain automatically from DHCP" select ASsign manually
Now enter the details from the ipconfig /all prompt. For the DNS server enter the same as the default-gateway for primary address, and one from the ipconfig thing in the secondary!
Hope that helps[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

click start, all programs, accessories then use the command prompt to access ipconfig.
try ipconfig /renew
(space after "ipconfig")
That will apply for a new ip but if the DHCP server on the router is only giving out IP's x number of times, it doenst solve that problem, simply requests more!
As I said, if you use a static ip address it will ensure DHCP isn't needed![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

When you say number of times you are referring to a DHCP range/number of avaliable addresses, right?
Wht are you asking? Are you saying you only want one address avaliable so no one else can get an address from your router or there are no more addresses?
Either way you will need to go into the interface/GUI of your router.
Then (probably) in network settings, in DHCP, have a look at scope options.
Set the start and finish addresses to create the 'range'
E.G
1 address:
START 80.10.1.1
END 80.10.1.2
If you want for example 10 addresses avaliable
START 80.10.1.1
END 80.10.1.10
and so on
Then if the PC is connected to the oruter when it starts up it will automatically get an address. If you plug the cable in after it has started up, do a release and renew:
- start
- run
- type cmd
- ipconfig /release
- enter (your address will go to 0.0.0.0)
- ipconfig /renew
- enter (will pick up an address from DHCP)
If this hasn't answered your question please let me know in more detail what you are trying to do.
Hope this helps.0 -
I think the OP's question is
"Why does my laptop only get an IP Address some of the time and not all of the time".
Indeed only 1 ip may be in the DHCP rules, but I'd still recommend using a static address.... Just ensure that if your ip is 192.168.1.2 for example, when using static use 192.168.1.5 just so if any other computers get added to the network there are no conflicts[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

Yep, if you are using a static (manually set in Control Panel -> Network Connections, then properties) make sure it is outside of the range you set.
If it is only working half the time, make sure your neighbors aren't hacking in via wiresless - anotehr good reason to use a static address.0 -
Thanks for all of the help so far! Things have got worse now, its taking up to 10 repairs to try and get a connection that is not 'limited or no connectivity' which is bad enough but i keep dropping the connection aswell
I have tried putting the settings in manually but i'm not having much luck with that either, its says its connected but when it won't open any pages on the internet, I just get a cannot find server or cannot display the page message.
I also tried going on to the web interface page and looking for the settings so I can see how many ip addresses its set for but no luck with that either. I am using a rubbish router by Edimax that our ISP sent us at the moment as our belkin one went wrong the other day. I dont suppose anyone happens to know where the ip address thing is on the edimax interface?
I'm sorry to be such a pain, I am really grateful for any help!

May be something in there to tell you where to find it[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."
