I'm not sure what your alternative lifestyle groups are - nothing illegal?
In my case fb has allowed my extended family to get a better idea of who I actually am. My sister in laws face was a picture trying to explain to her why I like minimal techno, and it actually inspired a great conversation with my nan about feminism
My feeling is am nearly 30 now - why provide my family with a 'sanitised' version of my life. Unless you rely on them financially, or otherwise.
Alternatively, you can certainly create a second profile, or keep a close eye on your privacy settings, although facebook makes this hard as they keep changing them!
edit to add - personally I never, ever, ever have colleagues on facebook. Not even ex colleagues.0 -
For myself, I don't have any current work collegues on Facebook because I think it's unprofessional. As for my family - I'm comfortable enough in myself for them to see anything that I post. Before I post anything I think to myself "would I be happy for my mum/husband to read or see this?" and if not then it doesn't go on. In general I think that people tend to post far too much personal information on the internet, and this might well come back to bite them in the future.
Having said all that, if you have a genuine reason for wanting to hide parts of your life from your family but still want to keep in touch with them, a second Facebook profile is probably the way to go. I wouldn't worry about trying to make the profile look like anything in particular - just view it as a different way to communicate with your family, and so use it to post and view family-related stuff.0 -
I have just recently permanently deleted my facebook account, bunch of rubbish actually reading how in love others are with their current bit of fluff. The whats for dinner status's, the daily drama of other peoples lives are about as interesting as watching paint dry and the game requests what a pile of old rubbish.
For those who think just deactivating their accounts this doesn't do anything it facebook still have your details on their systems.
OP why not just keep up with the line that you haven't got facebook and as for photo's surely your family can email any you haven't got?0 -

I have heard that even deleting your account doesn't necessarily wipe your photos off either? But I could be wrong

You can edit your friends list so only you can see it, unless there are mutual friends! You can also set up a new list and add your family to that and then just change the post settings to whoever you want to see it! Or just set up a new account just for family and say that you'd forgot the password to old one if they know you already have an account!Kate

Whilst we are not forbidden facebook accounts by work they are strongly advised against - so most collegues have one but under a psydoname so thay can keep up with their friends - but be hard to find and impossible to contact
why dont you say you have a similar problem
then you could look at theirs
and they would see you dont use yours
I dont know what you do for a living but would that be plausible?Fight Back - Be Happy0 -
Facebook have many rules and regulations, and members' having more than one account is definitely against their rules.
If discovered it's possible they would close both the present account and newly created one.
Have a look here

Scroll down a little to 'DON'T CREATE MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS'.
i know several people in the comping section have had FB accounts deleted.
Good luck0 -
I've had it for years, had my family (cousins only) and my OH's family (all of them:/) on it. My OH decided because of work that it was a pain and deleted his account, made a fictional one for close friends only and then his ones started doing my head in.
I deleted mine, added the people I wanted only and blocked his family from seeing me. Needless to say my inbox is much quieter

LOL nothing illegal, just not their idea of living .... I was brought up in a small town, I couldn't fart without someone reporting it back to my parents and still hate it that type of situation.
I kind of agree re getting to know the real me/you but I guess I will just have to nurture my "other" profile a little and see how things go.
I agree re colleagues & work but they don't seem to see things this way ...0 -
I have a couple of friends who have two accounts for exactly the same reason as you. One of them is gay and although his family know and are perfectly happy and at ease with it, he doesn't want his mum and dad to see some of the photos of his more wild nights out. (And having seen them, I can quite understand why )
Just open another account using both your first and middle name (if you have one) as well as your surname. You won't flag up to the FB police, your family will find you easily but your friends won't. Never the twain shall meet!
