OK, thought this was the best place to ask. I'm looking for people who have had both the iphone (or ipod) 4th generation model AND then went on to upgrade to the 5th Generation.

Question is: Siri aside, is there any real difference? Was it worth doing? If it did cost you anything, was it worth paying for?

  • iPhone 4 to iPhone 5 = better processing speed, better camera, lighter, thinner, more support in the future, latest handset

iPhone 4S to iPhone 5 = no real difference other than the 5 is taller, and processor is different (not huge)

if you own a iPhone 4 and considering the 5 it may benefit you, but if the iPhone 4 is working 5 then I'd wait for the next iPhone.

If you own a 4S and considering the 5 I'd hold off for the next one (5S?) or the 6.
  • And to answer 'was it worth paying for?'

I paid £249.99 up-front for mine and I don't think it was worth it, I now own an Xperia Z. Apple just aren't innovating enough for me.

Thanks- that answers my question! I'd thought there didn't seem much of a difference when looking at the models in the shop, this confirms it to me! I had earmarked the 5 as an idea but at this rate I think the 7 is looking like a better idea!
  • It's unnecessary expense when other phones are doing it better, which is a shame because I really like Apple. Great phones in terms of usability, but it always feels like I never really get my money's worth.

I'm glad I can help either way!

The iPhone 4S is supposed to have a slower data throughput on 3G compared to the 5. The 5 is to some extent 4G compatible, but might not cover all the "new" bands, it depends on which network you use it with (O2 and Vodafone appear to be planning to use bands not included with the current iPhone 5, EE and Three look to be OK).

Battery life is claimed to be better, but I find battery life on an iPhone 5 to be awful... Apparently many (most) smart phones aren't very smart when it comes to battery life. I can get a couple of days use if I don't browse the web and just send the odd text or two, but browsing or talking hammers the battery and needs a daily charge.

    Main difference is the connector:
4S - 30-pin dock connector, with analog audio output, digial video output, analog audio input, remote control (track +/-, album +/- etc) and access to thousands accessories - docks, stands, whatever you can imagine.
5 - new, proprietary, world's most expensive microUSB connector (technically it's a USB connector only)
4S has easy to replace battery, 5 battery is virtually not accessible. Plus anodised case, which is just a magnet to any scratches
