my eldest daughter started a saturday job when she was 14 , she worked at a barn selling animal feed , only paid about £3-00ph , but she was happy with that as there were a couple of mates there , however she then asked at out local hotel if they needed any waitresses and they gave her a job , paid £5ph + tips , this was for a sunday, and 1 evening + weddings etc on saturdays , when she left school she went to college , but only for 2 days when she wasn't there or doing college work at home she worked at the hotel , cleaning/servicing rooms , reception , , as she proved herself as very hard working and reliable they upped her hourly rate , some weeks she is bringing home £300 and she has saved several thousand £s , in june she's off abroad to work for " a top travel agent ", although tbh the pay she will be getting from them is a pitance , bu8t it's what she wants to do
Wow what an impressive young lady you have raised. She has a really great work ethic and will clearly go far in life :TThe best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. I started at 13 with the weekly paper round and hen progressed on to a daily round. the Sunday supplements were a killer back then - I hate to think what they would be like now!! I then worked in a chippy for one evening and one lunchtime per week. I loved it. I did this whilst I was at 6th form. DD who is now 16 started doing the weekly papers last year, earning between 6 and 8 per round. She then got a job at a local restaurant before Christmas and earns between 70 and 140 per fortnight for a couple of shifts each weekend. She is loaded as she never spends anything! Fits in really well with college, and she has he flexibility to up the hours in the holidays.0

I got my first 'job' at 13, I'd help out all weekend at the stables in return for riding lessons. I stuck at that until 16 when I got a 'proper' job at a local hotel as a waitress. After I left there at age 19 (uni commitments) I now work at a student nightclub.
I would definitely advise getting a job ASAP as a young person and staying in work as much as you can. I think it's because I haven't been out of work since 13 that I've found it so easy to find a graduate job now I'm leaving uni!Started 30/08/2011Biggest Wins: GHD's, 5* Trip to London, VIP Trip to Isle of MTV Festival in Malta.

DD1 started her first job at 14. She was an "in water helper" at a swimming school, at 16 she became an assisstant teacher and qualified as a lifeguard 2 years later qualified as a swimming teacher, earining £12.50 per hour. It came in very useful when she was out of work for a few months. DD2 qualifield as a lifeguard last year and is currently an "in water helper" She will be doing both her assistant teacher and full teachers cert. soon. One did, the other is doing a sports course at college and found their work experiences useful. DS1&2 will be encouraged to follow in their footsteps.0

Thanks for all the feedback.
My son is really into computers, and wants to work in that area in the future.
For now, i think i will just get him to concentrate on school work, until he is 16. He can earn money when he is 14 by babysitting his younger brother, and also can earn pocket money by doing chores around the house.0 -
First job for me was in a Newsagents at 16, £3.60p/h. I'm now 25.
Encourage him about work, but not for now. Encourage him to start thinking of the idea of it for when he turns 16.
I'm no longer in that job.0 -

Oh to be young again and have that amount of energy and stamina. She will love working in travel. It doesn't always pay well but some of the opportunities to get out there and see the world are fabulous. A good friend of mine has been in that industry for over 20 years and loves it still. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. My DS1 got a Saturday job in a local shop a few weeks before his 16th birthday and kept it right through to going to university.
DS2 is just turned 17 and has never had a 'regular' job. He has worked in the factory, where I work, in the summer though. You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0
