  • If you're still looking for cheap lobster, some tescos have a whole lobster for £3(frozen), as they are discontinued. Bought one today, couldn't believe the price, mind you they are small....
  • Are you near London? Anyone can use Billingsgate market, every weekday morning. Just off the A13 next to Canary Wharf. The freshest, biggest choice of fish you have ever seen.

I have never bought my fish there, but had to walk through to arrange my parking permit as they let people buy season parking tickets for their carpark.

Be warned though - at 6am, the smell of fish does strange things to a girls stomach...!

Ps. I had to walk through in high heels and a suit... you might want to dress down, there are lots of shouty blokes!

Sorry, but I think lobster is over-priced and over-rated!

I would rather go for crayfish tails or fresh crab any day - more flavour and much cheaper.

Crab meat with chopped avocado in a seasoned white wine sauce topped with parmesan and grilled - fab!

    Me too :)

But a posh dinner is a posh dinner - so if perception of posh means lobster then fine. But if you want impressively tasty... go with crab or crayfish :)

Lobster and cheap are not two words I would ever use together! I like lobster but agree with others who have said that crab is wonderful, so is cray...but unfortunately they are very difficult to get cheaply either...never understand why we pay the earth for fish on an island...

    Thanks for that...need fish now!

  • Lol, never understand why we pay the earth for fish on an Island either, every other country is dirt cheap!!

To be honest you do not get a lot of meat from a lobster and would need at least 1 per person!!

I would choose a nice unusual fish instead or just do a classic Moules Marniere with either white wine or garlic sauce.

Scallops are another flash option or for a lobster effect go for langoustines :)

Red Mullet is also quite posh lookig!

Like everyone else, my instant answer would be 'cheap and lobster don't go together' and if they do, there is likely something wrong with the lobster.

I will put in another vote for scallops. Scallops make a wonderful warm salad.

Or, if you don't want to cook, and can get them, how about a big platter of oysters, cooked/served different ways (not sure how much they would cost, but portion control would be easier as you could decide on, say, four or five per person and have something to bulk it out. They are rich anyway.

  • My local Tesco were selling the frozen whole side of wild salmon ready prepared with lemon and thyme butter for 1/2 price at £3 each the other day. Bought one for me and one for DD. Neither of us has tried them yet, but they are a decent size and would each serve around 3-4. They do look lovely.

Even in Maine, the fresh lobster wasn't cheap but the frozen Canadian or Maine lobster is more reasonable.

  • I love lobster but the price...ouch! Scottish lobster is fantastic - much nicer than those airmiles lobsters from Australia and Canada but a rare treat....as for frozen - no, sorry just not the same. Anyway M&S were charging £14 for a frozen Canadian lobster (1 small tail, split in half) - you can buy a whole fresh local (Scottish) one for that price!! But you will have to kill it cook it eat it yourself (Or find a friendly fishmonger to do it for you). I agree try scallops, langoustines, crab (white meat only is expensive though!) or monkfish, although the latter is said to be a bit overfished? Or if you have the money Turbot or Dover Sole (my 2 favourite white fish) or if not get some really fresh mackerel to show how great this under-rated (and cheap) fish can be or even smoked mackerel and make a nice pate? Or Morecambe bay shrimps with homemade brown bread/toast (another great British product, I love these). http://www.morecambebayshrimps.com/Potted_Shrimp.htm
Or try a ceviche (raw fish marinated/'cooked' in lime juice which always impresses, make sure the fish is fresh though (not from a supermarket!!)
