This BT Vision thing, is it a bit pricey??

Hello all,
I'm after a freeview box basically and it seems as I have BT broadband and phoneline (not through choice but only as I live in an unbundled BT monoploly area) I thought I may as well get their box.
Has anyone had any joy of getting one (for existing customers) for less than £119 (£49 activation and then £5 a month) for the first year?
I really don't want any of those extra package channels so £5 a month for freeview sems a bit of a liberty. The bloke at BT told me it was because of the BBCi player access but as I said to him, that is free online so why the ruddy bejesus would I pay you £5 just so that you can take a free service and they claim it as a premium product.
Really I want a free freeview service and don't want to pay BT for a box when it already costs me £40 a month for their relegation zone candidates (football) quality of service in phone and broadband.

Your thoughts??

Why don't you just buy a T1000 YouView box outright.
    No monthly payments.
Prices are a comin down too.

You can buy a 'Freeview box' for a tenner. Are you wanting a PVR with on-demand capabilities?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • PVR would be handy, only something equivalent to a 90 minute VHS tape. I only need to record Have I Got News for You once a week, but on Fridays I record the 10 'O' Clock news as well hence the 90 minutes :)

Maybe I need a VHS recorder as well :)

So you just need a basic Freview SD PVR-not any on demand features. A Humax PVR 9300T from Richer Sounds or Humax Direct will do the job.
Why pay for an ongoing BTV subscription for services you don't need or want?

I agree! I just wondered if anyone had been able to convince BT that the service was worthless and get it for free!

    I'll check those out, thanks.

No, you won't, and it locks you into BT's overpriced broadband service. Which, incidentally, is not your only option on an unbundled exchange. There are dozens of BT resellers who will sell you the same service over the BT network, better and cheaper.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
