Sky Service Update

When I turned on my TV tonight, I saw a msg displayed saying that sky want to do a service update and could I go on skyviewinghelp.com to enter some details. They require the following details:
Country
Version No
Serial no
Viewing card no
Receiver no
I'm somewhat suspicious about this, as sky should have these details already. Besides, I thought service updates are downloaded automatically. Is this a normal request by sky or could it be a scam?

    It looks totally fake! But isn't.

    It even promotes Setanta Sports (who went bust years ago). The Whois shows Sky as the Technical Contact. And it would be hard for a scammer to activate an on screen message, but I agree, as a data collection method, this sucks.

    I've not seen this reported anywhere else, but if you are directed on to the official Sky.com website then it can't be a scam.

    Found this in the help forum answered officially by Sky in 2012;
    http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Account-Billing-Q-A/Is-a-security-update-being-carried-out-that-requires-sending-box/qaq-p/686716

    I don't know why Sky refer to a "security update", you are not living abroad by any chance?
  • It has been reported on other forums and is a genuine request from Sky to ensure that their records are correct ref serial numbers and receiver ID on their database are correct. This appears to be something to do with new "pairing requirements" for subacription entitlements. If this info is incorrect at their end you may lose access to some services until it is corrected.

    It's not a request for a security update - it was for a SERVICE UPDATE

    Really?
    Then why does the Sky representative in the link I posted state categorically;
    "We are carrying a security update to your Sky box in the near future, the information we need about your box will allow us to ensure you continue to receive all the services you've subscribed to. Without this information you may be unable to receive some of your channels after the security update".

    You still haven't answered as to whether you are abroad....
