I am a student a recently dropped my iphone, i had the screen repaired with a DIY screen i bought on Amazon, but now the middle button doesnt work at all. I called my service provider and they said there is nothing they can do, as i understandably had it repaired by a third party. my contract is under a year old and im tied to a 24 month contract with a phone that doesnt work. Any idea if i can escape the contract, can i cancel the direct debit legally? They said i could pay to get rid of it - but id have to pay £300!!! Do i have to just accept that i cant do a thing?

Yeah, wouldnt life be great if u could get out of mobile contracts.......
ur stuck with it.credit card bill. £0.00
overdraft £0.00
Help from the state £0.000 -
I see they don't teach basic contract law in schools....
Aren't students supposed to be smart?
If you've signed a contract for 2 years you can't just cancel it like that. The fact that you broke your phone and it's now out of warranty has nothing to do with your contract which is for the air time.
Next time get insurance, or just don't sign up for a 2 year agreement if you're prone to breaking your phone easily.
The best advice i can give you is the following-
-Pay a third party/Apple to repair your phone
OR
-Sell your phone on ebay for spares/repairs and buy a new phone at the same cost.0 -
Theres no need to talk like that, i wanted constructive advice nothing else.0

I'm a student myself.. But i agree, perhaps i was too harsh. But contract law is not rocket science or anything.
I have given you constructive advice which is more than anyone else has said. Don't cancel the direct debit, they'll ruin your credit file and chase your for the debt. So like i and others have said you either need to see the contract out or pay the £300 to cancel.0 -
No, you cannot get out of the contract for the reason you have stated. And on no account should you just cancel the direct debit.
Buy yourself a cheap phone and stick the sim card in it for the rest of the contract.0 -
There's no reason why you should be allowed to end your contract, take the mobile to the third party repairer and see how much it will cost to repair.0

Just take the phone in to a repair shop and get the button fixed!!
As to cancelling your contract, surely you are not being serious when you say you unaware that when you sign a 2 year contract then you cant cancel it until the 2 years have finished.0 -

No i did not say i was unaware, i understand what a 2 year contract is, i asked if there was any way you can get out of them, as in pay extra or something0 -

Then why did you ask if you can cancel the direct debit? I'm unsure what you want? Pay extra? If you want to cancel you have to pay the full £300 or whatever you owe on the remaining line rental.
