I stand to be corrected but an 'IP camera' is one than works over a computer network.

So that the computer does the monitoring and recording.

You can by cameras to link to vcr's that just monitor continuously

    hope that helps

Mind you, it's not fun going back over long periods of footage :D

This is where you need a smarter solution like http://www.h264soft.com/h264webcam.html. This software monitors 'motion' - well changes in light.

Firstly it is not as easy to install as the maplin one, as it is a computer with extra software that needs configuring, Also any poxy change in brightness including, flying bird, clouds, cats, cars with flashing light, squirrel, snowflakes, bag blowing in the wind etc trigger it. Some of this can be mitigated by careful placement, selection of trigger zones- not choosing all of them ,and playing with sensitivity. However all this said, it is still far better than going through hours of video!

Another thing is that you can set how much you want to record before an event has happened, and how long after standstill you still want to record.

I have had a modicum of success with recording at night with an ebay cameras packed with 50+ ir leds, but getting past 8m was about the limit, about 5m would let you recognise someone you knew.

Do not under estimate the usefulness of IR and microwave movement sensors as in outdoor lights. My most useful item I ever bought was something like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/B2-WIRELESS-SHOP-VISITOR-PIR-SENSOR-WITH-PLUG-IN-DOORBELL-CHIME-ALERT-ALARM-/261096442620?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Door_Accessories_LE&var=&hash=item3cca8f8afc

Do you have , or can you get hold of a video recorder? as in a hand held one or a tv vcr.

if so that is probably the easiest and simplest way to go ( not necessarily the best)

it will only work for as long as the tape is , and it will not have motion sensors ....... so that means having to review the whole tape :-(

It that does not do the job then come back and some one will walk you through a computer based one .... dearer but better

    good luck
