I collect rags/old clothes from freecycle, house clearances, family etc and when I have a van load take them direct to the local rag dealer who pays £550/tonne without sifting through them. In Feb i had to get shut of 10/15 bags so took them to the local shop who emptied every bag but only rejected an oily pair of torn overalls even thought there was torn cloths, curtains and coats. OP, check your local area to see if there is an established rag dealer, these dealers will buy the lot, often for a better price.

Just had a massive clearout to free up some storage space, and filled about 6 bin bags of old clothes.

There's a clothing recycling place nearby which offers about 50p a kilo for unwanted clothes so I rang them to check their opening times thinking I'd take the stuff there rather than chuck it all out.

Waste of time. They said they won't accept any clothing that's not modern and in excellent condition. They don't want plus sizes, faded jeans, anything bobbled or with buttons missing or school uniforms among other items. In short, most of the stuff I was going to take to them.

So looks like I'll just have to chuck it all away after all.:(

    1. Those cash for clothes people emulate charities so that people feel they're doing something altruistic, yet are simply second-hand clothes retailers. That's why they only want modern stuff in excellent condition. They make an absolute fortune selling stuff for top dollar that cost them pennies to buy.

    2. Why chuck it away?? Why not give it to charity?
