House Owners Post Received at Rented Property

    Even if they're abroad, they may still own a car, and would have to be insured. It could be they keep it for when they make visits back to the UK.

    As for the furniture- well if you rented a part furnished home, you really complain that their furniture is in the way! You can ask for them to remove some of it, but they'd be within their rights to say no I'm sure.

That says to me they have no intention of updating their address with the insurers and for some reason they want to go on using your address for their car insurance even though you've been there since Sept 2011!!! Given that's one year, nine months it would have seen a renewal which is usually done every year.

    As for furniture you rented as is so they aren't obliged to remove anything. It's common to exclude the loft anyway in case a tenant puts a foot through the ceiling etc.

    But they don't live in the address the car is insured at.

    The only reason you would do that is because you would get cheaper car insurance than at your real address.

    I'm aware you can insure your car at a few postcodes (I had 3 at one time) but those cases the insurer calculates the amount you pay using the most expensive one.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    Merely pointing one that fact that just because they're still ensuring a car, doesn't mean they still live in the UK. I know - because I live outside the UK, but still have a car in the UK.

    this time round, I've got my sister looking after it, so I've transferred ownership to her, and she's insuring it herself. In fact, a few years ago I was able to get a deal with my insurer whereby they kept my policy running, without me even having the car anymore (allowed me to get the the end of my year and get my no-claim-bonus year)

    Gah. I've just re-read what I posted yesterday and I can see that it's a little on the whingey side. Note to self: don't post late at night when feeling unwell.

    As most things are, it's just these little irritations that seem to prey on your mind. It's not really a bother, I must learn to be happy with what I do have. It could be worse really.

    While what you are doing is fine what they are doing would breach their insurer's terms and conditions as while they own the property it's not their residence. It's also not a valid correspondence address while the tenants live in it.

    If the car is kept at a relation or friend's property then they should use that address for their insurance. Insurance companies ask you the postcode(s) where the car is kept at night.

    Don't think you are a little whingey or it's a minor irritation.

    When I moved in to a few properties I had a delude of mail from previous occupants that kept coming. Most of it was junk but there were also bank statements, cheque books, bank cards etc.

    One or two things always did come for the landlords but they were always things like the water bill which was included in the rent, and TV licensing if the landlord had lived in the house before.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

    ***UPDATE***

    Well, we've been served a Section 21 notice on the property and have to vacate by 1st Dec. Whether or not this is a result of HMRC catching up with the owners thanks to my letter on the return mail (we think there's something fishy going on with the business they had) or if the owners want us out as they think we're unhelpful (re forwarding their mail 2 years down the line).

    But I guess we'll never know what the reason is but we've managed to find a new place in less than a week and we've advised the Letting Agent of our 1 months notice. We'll be spending the weekend looking for furniture and I'll have to start getting things packed up as our final day is 2nd Nov.

    Fingers crossed the new house will be OK and that the new Letting Agents are a bit more professional than the ones we have now!

    Good luck with your move. In the circumstances, I;d be even more meticulous than usual about your check-out inventory, ensuring that *you* set up redirection for your post etc.

    Just slightly concerned by the discrepancy between the day of the month for the expiry of the s.21 and your notice period.

    What are the dates of each monthly rental period - when did the most recent fixed term run out?

    How did you serve your notice, and when did you do so?
