It depends on the strength of signal from the nearest terrestrial transmitter. The system is designed for use with external aerials so those who can 'get away with' internal aerials are in the minority and extremely lucky.
However, you can pick up a Freeview STB on Freegle or Freecycle and try it without any great investment.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

No Ariel, hows about this then?
Where the bee sucks, there lurk I;
In a cowslip's bell I lie;
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat's back I do fly
After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily, shall I live now,
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
No aerial - why not watch TV over the web?
If you don't watch "live" TV broadcasts, you don't need a TV licence, either - another £145 saved.0 -

luckieboy96 - yes, there are STACKS of Freeview boxes you can buy, starting at around £20 if you can go without recording.
Check your predicted coverage here:

But even better would be to borrow a box and indoor aerial to see what you can get.
Of course it's not as good as getting a proper aerial installed on the roof or in the roofspace, but it MAY be good enough depending on where you live. See what direction your neighbour's aerials are pointing too and point yours the same way.0 -

It's worth checking your TV. If it is fairly recent (flat screen within the last 5 years or so) it may have a freeview receiver built in meaning you just need to connect aerial to it.0

Looking at the roof, I think there is an aerial but cant see where it goes. Opposite me is an aerial company so i might ask them. I don't want to pay a lot as i am on the transfer list. I will try and get a freeview box. My TV is 16 years old!!0

If you don't see the cable from the aerial down the outside of the house, it probably comes into the roofspace somewhere. Have a look around where you think the aerial is above, or above where your aerial socket is in the house - it hopefully goes straight down.0
